And that's exactly why I NEVER do ANY Windows Updates.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it. :)

Oh, it's broken alright... it's just a matter of time before you find out how broken it really is.

Windows updates are like vehicle recalls. Even though your "vehicle" might not be exhibiting the symptoms of said recall(s) at present, you should sill have the fix applied... for your own safety. I'm not saying to download ALL the available updates... but I strongly recommend getting at least the critical ones.

Are there potential problems with these updates? Absolutely. Existing applications may lose functionality or fail to run at all, system performance might degrade, or your system may fail to even boot. I have seen all of these things at one time or another but these results are rare... at least in my experience.

For your sake, I hope you get lucky and NEVER have any issues because of an unpatched Windows installation.

Thieves are always looking for unlocked doors... your doors are standing wide open.

Just my $.02! ;)

I am an IT Security Manager by day... I'll keep it short and sweet...You should run your updates unless you're disconnected from the Internet entirely. We update approximately 35,000 workstations per month...very rare that the patches cause any serious problems with workstations. They can cause some poorly written 3rd party apps to have problems on occasion, but all in all this risk isn't worth not patching (granted I speak from a corporate standpoint). On servers, we go through a much more thorough testing process before pushing the patches out monthly in the datacenters. Still all things considered, we have very few instances of any major issue with critical patches.

We also restrict VPN access from remote users unless their machines meet a specific patch level.

That's not to say that problems never happen, but typically relatively minor and extremely infrequent.

FWIW.

Where do you get 3 days? Upman hasn't said ANYTHING, and if you go by what he said on the 2nd the release could be anywhere from tomorrow to the 15th, it depends on how they are counting the days, if they aren't working weeends the earliest would be the 12th, or then again it could be NEVER, which at this point is the most likely time.....

Are we talking about the Microsoft santa and his "Tuesday" updates, or the jolly Uniden santa and the firmware updates? :D

At this point its safe to assume that if Uniden came out with a new scanner tomorrow that would be able to scan and decode any mode of transmission known to man and only cost $10 you still would be here complaining. Does every post someone makes about the update have to be answered by you and your negativity towards anything Uniden? I think its time to give it a rest. Go hang out in the GRE forum if Uniden is so bad. I think its time you stop beating this horse. Hes been dead long ago.

The truth hurts....... and it's safe to say no one will come out with a scanner that can recieve any mode of transmission at any price, and it's safe to say a lot of people are PO'ed about Unidens lack of customer service for a scanner that they paid $500 for..... don't like what I write don't read it... problem solved. In the meantime I'll post what and where I want...it's a free country.

I will remind you that although the country is as you describe, this site is a private site, so although you may express your opinions, you know the rules.

Although I agree with you, please consider that no matter how irritating any one individual is to you, they are allowed to express an opinion, indeed repeat it. My advice is similar to Viper's; ignore.

Gotta just love post padding. Looks like you have cornered the market. You should really take some of your own advice though.

i will wait till there ready to release it , he (paul) was honest enough to tell us it was pushed back , so we know its coming , id rather them work out the bugs and get it right then them release it with problems . so im just going to be patient and wait , we've lived without it this long , if we go to the end of april without it , will it matter ? its coming and at least i am patiently waiting .

Be that as it may, imagine if Uniden had made the firmware a public beta? We daring members would've been fixing v3.5 by now.

Since we don't know anything about what it will fix/add/improve, there's no chance of having our hopes dashed if it's less than stellar. There is built-up anxiety, witnessed in this thread for the update. This will have an industry watching as well. Uniden has a lot riding on this update.

Their making the upgrade process difficult with ESNs, etc., don't sit well with me. All along the website makes getting updates a PITA. It almost feels like they really don't want to give anything away. How is that customer support? How sophmore'ish!

So we wait.

i agree with you in somewhat of what you said , Im just stating that im not going to sit here and stress like a lot of guys are about this , im just taking the wait and see approach , again , id rather have them push back the release date and fix the bugs that upman said are going to be fixed . if this doesnt live up to its expectations , then we can ***** all we want . but iv lived with the edacs beeps and the motorboating this long ... whats another couple of weeks or days ... (hopefully) . i just hope they right the wrongs. ill give them the benifit of the doubt.

Stay cool guys...or maybe find another hobby for a while

Good call...

I'm for the wait and see...the scanner market is, I'm betting, small for Uniden. I've paid more than 500 bucks for electronic gear that has far less customer support, let alone an employee who openly hangs out in public fora and actually listens to and responds to whining...UPMan doesn't have to do that...and he's not Uniden...I bet he's about as busy as a one legged man in an arse kicking contest...yet he still has the courtesy to tell us what's going on with his employer...

Everybody has opinions...as do I. When updates are there, they're there. If I have to pay for something really really really cool, I'll make that decision. I don't have a huge monitoring post...I don't have LMR-whatever running to the dc-daylight super +100dBd gainer semi-active bluetooth-enabled wi-fi enabled whoosiwhatsit...I've got conventional and trunked systems, P25 and non-P25 systems, LVHF, VHF, UHF, Mil, and whatever freqs all around me, and I have been happy with my Uniden purchases. I also have an order in for both new GRE scanners...just because.

I love the scanning...pure and simple...I'll update as I can, and luckily, thus far, I haven't had any problems I can't get over...or that can't be replaced by my real life.

I can certainly understand the frustration of dealing with something that doesn't work as expected. I also agree that everyone here has a right to be heard... frustrations, criticisms, and praises alike.

What I can't understand is how much the negativity has escalated with the announcement and delay of the updates that just might solve most of these issues. It's like they came out of the woodwork at exactly the moment Uniden made the announcement. It seems like every thread mentioning the updates gets targeted by a select few members and is then filled with the same tired arguments. For the record... I understand your opinions/viewpoints, although I disagree with most of them.

Yes... Uniden IS releasing updates! :p

I am looking forward to the updates being released and the 396/996 issues being resolved so we can all finally move on.
