According to the FCC Database, Ventura County has applied for a license to implement a digital TRS. The proposed transmitter is located on South Mountain, near Santa Paula. The pending application is: 0002862735.

In addition, Ventura County has been licensed for an extensive digital microwave backbone system, with many sites all across the county. Looks like this system will be rather extensive once it's fully implemented. Does anyone know what vendor won the contract for this system?

I don't know who the vendor is, but the new microwave system is the first part of our Radio Improvement Project. The County Sheriff's and Fire Department are jointly paying for an entirely new microwave backbone to support a new radio infrastructure.

Before anybody panics - we are still going to be VHF analog, and so is the Sheriff's Dept. (for the foreseeable future). When all is said in done in a few years, the County Fire will have several repeated/simulcast channels for command operations, and retain matching simplex tactical channels for fire ground ops. I will submit modifications to the channel plan as we make them in the future, and for the record, we are not doing any reprogramming this year. The channel matrix in place is good for at least another year.

I see that Ventura County has also applied for a slow-growth license. Here is the timetable for system implementation. As you can see, they don't plan on having the system in operation until the year 2011.

Thanks for the link. I have not seen the "official" time frame to build out yet, but what is there tracks with what I have been told. It seems like 2011 is a long way off, but really 4 years is nothing in a completely new system architecture buildout. I think they may actually be a little optimistic. Let's hope not.

Mike,
If the VCFD & VCSO are staying on VHF-Hi, then who is going to 800? As I read that slo-growth document, it sounds like 800 is on the way.

Would this system just be for the misc County Depts (Animal Reg, Airports, Roads, etc) that are currently on hi-band?

Thanks,
Rob

The quick answer is I don't know. I talked to one of my FD radio techs today, and he has no knowledge of a 800/trunk system on the horizon. I showed him the slo-growth document, and he is going to ask around. If I hear anything interesting, I'll post it.
