Great radio, real superhet receiver, the only complaint some have is low TX audio due to the waterproof membrane over the mic element. IIRC Yaesu addressed this on later production radios. Some resolved this by opening the radio, and punching a pinhole in the membrane (though this makes the radio no longer IP67 rated).

There are a plethora of accessories including an AA battery case for this (and other) Yaesu HTs like the VX-6 (still for sale).

Thanks for your reply. I did buy the AA case for backup power. Glad it’s still a good radio. Did find the software to do the mars/cap mod. I fire it up periodically but otherwise it sits on my night stand. Thanks again

The MARS/CAP is not software, it is some soldering....
Mine finally went dead (filter) and yet recently came back to life, now see retry it again for reception

The performance level of the VX7 is good but it may have drifted off frequency after all these years. I think there is an alignment menu in them and if you can find the info it should be easy to put back on frequency. I found the menu structure in the VX7 horrible and if I didn’t use mine for a couple of months I had to break out the manual and learn everything over again. I got so frustrated with the menu I finally sold it.

Great little radio that has served me well for over a decade. Still use Yaesu VX-2R and VX-7R for testing and maintenance of suites of radio gear in pre-position sites and emergency management packages. Bought the VX-7R as a better option to the VX-2R, both freebanded so I could test commercial and amateur band radios, at that time on board large commercial vessels. These ships had rack of radio gear to program, calibrate, and maintain.

I have had to replace the small batteries a few times, and then antennas, after heat shrink repairs. But both still holding up well.

Whats a good way to see if it did drift? Just go on a active frequency and listen to see if I can listen to it? Thanks

There is a software mod for this. It works. I'll try to find it and post it. Been a few years ago when I did it.
Back in the days it was only the soldering
Good shows there is software now
