Hello All.

I have a Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller network card in my custom built Windows 7 Home Premium desktop computer. I think that an electric power surge or a power outage that occurred corrupted the software drivers for this card, because when I looked in Device Manager in Control Panel it said This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31) (Ive been using a Linksys wireless N adapter for internet access since this happened. Im a Rogers Hi-speed internet user on this desktop computer). My T.V. cable service also went out. Can anybody recommend a good website that can remotely diagnose and fix this problem? I was on Realtek's website and sent them an e-mail about this but I havent heard back from them yet.

Thanks Sheldon.

have you attempted loading the drivers again?

go back in to device manager.... in the device screen, there is a tab that says Details..... give me the Hardware ID. i need to know which chipset this is, and ill send you the right weblink for the driver.

are you Win7 x32 or x64?

im attaching a image of which Hardware ID i need.

the blue highlighted device id is the one.

HI.

Hi.

Yes I did try re-installing the software drivers for this device but I still had no luck being able to connect to the internet without the use of the Linksys wireless-N adapter.
Are these what you need from me?

PCI\VEN_10EC&DEV_8168&SUBSYS_77581462&REV_06
PCI\VEN_10EC&DEV_8168&SUBSYS_77581462
PCI\VEN_10EC&DEV_8168&CC_020000
PCI\VEN_10EC&DEV_8168&CC_0200

A few additional things to try...

1) Unplug your Wireless adapter.

2) Go to Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center > Change Adapter Settings.

2A) Make sure the NIC is not disabled.
2B) Disable any other NIC that show up.

3) Open a command prompt and type: ipconfig
Verify that you have an assigned IP address (such as 192.168.1.100 or similar.)

3A) If you do have an ip address, trying to ping the IP address of the Default Gateway (such as 192.168.1.1 or similar.)
3B) If you do not have an IP address, type: ping 127.0.0.1 and report is the pings are successful or fail.

If ping to 127.0.0.1 fails, then your NIC is most likely bad.
If ping to 127.0.0.1 is successful, check your router to be sure that it is configured correctly. (Possibly reboot your router and see if that fixes the issue.)

Hi.

It is a custom built desktop computer that I had someone build for me, as I am a physically disabled man in a wheelchair, with 32bit Windows 7 Home Premium installed in it. I hope I didnt confuse anyone earlier about anything.

If it's a desktop computer and you have a spare PCI slot, you can pick up PCI NIC's for very cheap.

Hi.

It is a desktop computer but Im not sure that I actually need to buy a new NIC because Device Manager says that 'This device is not working properly because the software drivers are missing'' or something to that effect. I did try reloading the software drivers from Realteks website with no luck.

im wondering if drivers caused a hardware mis-config, or something else.... but yeah, a Gbit card or even a 10/100 is like what ..... 5 -10 $ if that?

You got some good advice here, there is another possibility that your registry and/or TCP/IP stack is corrupted. You may have to run something like TCP Fix or similar, there is few of these on Internet just Google "TCP fix" or "TCP/IP fix"
PS. I am not saying that it will fix it but it is worth trying. Obvious you need another PC to access internet, just download software to USB stick.
Good luck Chris

another method is repairing and resetting the TCP Stack with NETSH

open the CMD command shell as a Admin in the start menu, usually found under Accessories.

when you find CMD "Command Prompt" RIGHT CLICK it, dont LEFT click, select "Run as Administrator"

you will get a black window looking like the old DOS interface, which it essentially is.

type in the following:

NETSH init tcp reset resetlog.txt

Press ENTER

sometimes a restart does not work, usually a COLD boot, meaning FULL power down and boot up again.

see if you can connect now.... if no.... then invest in a new NIC.

FWIW: if the registry is even further corrupted.... you CAN revert the registry to default......

WARNING

you WILL loose any customized settings and potentially have to reinstall some software that uses registry hive entry points.

this is a LAST RESORT

get a new card before defaulting a registry.
