Here I am, a rich Republican, using my $250.00 two year old ASUS touch screen computer with Win 8.1. I have VLC streaming audio and have connected my Bluetooth headset as well. Pretty cool as I sit around the Country Club with Biff and Chauncy. ;)

RH536 will stream the display to both the laptop and my desktop, but VLC won't stream audio to both at the same time.

Set up was actually pretty easy. As someone else noted earlier on, don't try to search for the IP address in RH536. Read it off the scanner info and type it in.

Nice work so far Uniden.

Went to bed last night with the 536 set-up and had been streaming to the pc in the kitchen. When I woke up today the scanner was not pinable nor did the app or vlc work. I went to the scanner and checked the wifi status and it showed the ip address. I "re-connected" it to the wifi network and the app and vlc work again. I'll see what happens tomorrow morning.

Jay,

"First line in your error message: "Access to the path 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Uniden\BC-WF1_FirmwareUpdater\2_10_2015_5_30_33_PM.log' is denied.""

Yes that is what thought since I ran as Admin. My thinking was something had it open so I rebooted and ran again with same result w/full admin account. In any event not going to spend a lot of time on this.

Shift right click on the exe and select run as administrator. By default apps are not opened as admin in windows even if your using a admin account..

Got everything up and running after reading the advice to just input the IP into the RH 536 software. It feels great running the scanner from anther room and having audio as well. Future is bright! And no more coax from one room to another. B-)

So, I see there is an update, and although specifically the words say: "If you already attempted the update from 5.01 (and are receiving error 0004 or the Dongle firmware version reports as 0.00), unplug the wifi dongle and delete the file "BC-WF1..." from the "firmware" directory on your scanner. Leave the dongle unplugged until we issue an update."
What actually changed?
I still get error 004, and I'm curious as to what, if anything was achieved by this "fix"?
Was/has anyone been successful going from 5.01 to v 7_28?
Finally, I sold my HP-1 to get this "better" 536 model, and am completely dissatisfied, should I consider selling for a HP-2, or keep hanging in there?

Was/has anyone been successful going from 5.01 to v 7_28?

Upman posted a link yesterday in this forum on how to update a 5.01 dongle. I did that yesterday with minimal issues.

Following the instructions as given should work, however I found I needed to run the actual updater program as an administrator.

So my 5.01 dongle is now 7.28 and working fine.

I'm guessing the original upater, the one done through Sentinel, worked on "virgin" dongles, but those that went through the firmware update about a year ago (as in 5.01) were unable to be upated with last week's "stuff".

That was put there so that people don't have to sit through error messages when starting their scanner. If you have FW 0.00 showing, there is no fix yet announced, but Uniden's engineers in Japan are working on it.

Lots of people have been successful in going from 5.01 to 7.28 using the instructions for that particular upgrade path. Those of us with 0.00 have to wait patiently for Japan to come up with a solution that they deem even a 'layman' user can perform.

If you're "completely" dissatisfied by the 536 now, it's probably best that you dispose of it. What will be added once this wi-fi update is fixed is scanner audio and display over wi-fi, which if you're "completely" dissatisfied, is unlikely to sway you much. Furthermore, an HP2 isn't going to satisfy you either - because it too doesn't have the "missing" features from the 536.

My unscientific wild-*** guess (meaning, I have no inside information, and all I know is what I've seen here and experienced on my own radio) is that the updater built into Sentinel could handle 4.60 (or whatever) to 7.28, but could not handle 5.01 to 7.28. What seems to have happened is everyone who upgraded to 5.01 through the standalone updater and tried last week to update to 7.28 thru Sentinel got borked. Once that was sorted out, people figured out to try pushing the 7.28 update through the standalone updater, and that worked OK. It would appear that Sentinel (or the FW update for 7.28 itself) couldn't cope with seeing 5.01, and crashed.

Followed Jay's idea of setting up a static IP. Did so in my router, and can see it on list. In this case, the address is 192.168,1.20. Even with that, cannot get any scanner/dongle combo (from my 3 536HPs) to connect in infrastructure mode. Spoke with a couple of people who used same procedure aa me, and they conncected right away. My FIOS Verizon router seems to be WEP encryption only, says WPA2 not available. So I am really at a loss. Don't know that is the issue anyway.
I have been using ProScan for a while with my Uniden scanners and TeamViewer. That works well if want to control my 536HP from IPAD. However, would really like to get this dongle/Wi-Fi thing working so eventually can use the 536HP \without being tethered directly to a computer. Also would really like to experiment with the VLC/RH software. Oh well, will follow the thread, experiment around, and see. Maybe I will take the dongles/536s to another Wi-Fi router somewhere and see if I am able to connect in infrastructure mode.
My 536HPs immediately see my network during network search, but keep coming with the same "connection error" message after enter password. No problem in access point mode.

And you've installed the STM_VCP drivers?

  1. Download Wi-Fi-Updater.zip.
  2. Unzip the files downloaded in Step 1. Then, unzip the files in STM_VCP.zip.
  3. Navigate to the STM_VCP directory and run either VCP_V1.3.1_Setup.exe or VCP_V1.3.1_Setup_x64.exe depending on whether you are running a 32-bit or 64-bit OS.
  4. Plug the Wi-Fi dongle directly into a USB port on your PC and allow it to install.
  5. Run the program you installed in Step 6 by navigating to the Uniden --> BCDx36HP --> BC_Wifi_Updater application launcher in your programs list.
  6. When prompted, point the updater to the BC_WF1_V7_28.bin file, select the com port that was assigned to the dongle, then press OK to apply the update.
No. 3 Ran x64.exe

No. 4 Dongle will not install.....USB device not recognized when plugged in

No. 5 There is no BC_Wifi_Updater application launcher in my programs list

I now notice I do have V7.28.bin on my micro card. I guess thats good. Yesterday under firmware all I had was city tables and zip tables. On Sentinel when I connect and hit UPDATE FIRMWARE it will read and update every time now. It will not say Firmware is up to date. Bug?

I uninstalled Sentinel, the wifi updater, and the virtual serial port. Installed all the new software and I was up and running no problem.

Hoping "the app" is right around the corner.

I was able to update everything fine. I have the scanner in my car and used the card to update. Went perfect. I did NOT update the dongle last year so maybe that it why it went smoothly. I was able to get VLC installed and streaming beautifully but I can not get the remote program to work. It keeps telling me more then one is running. Can you run VLC and the remote program at the same time or is it one or the other?

1. Right click anywhere down on your Taskbar, choose 'Start Task Manager' from the menu.

2. On the 'Processes' tab, scroll down until you see a program or programs called 'RH-536HP_mkII.exe*32'.

3. Right click each of these and choose to 'End Process'.

Once all of them are gone from the list, close the Task Manager and try running the program again.

You could also just log out of Windows and back in OR Restart your computer to kill those off.

PC sees USB/Port~Com, firmware update "freezes", hangs, never completes, 2 log files get created with date and time (i.e., 2_11_2015_9_04_33_AM.log & 2_11_2015_9_04_38_AM.log) and update never happens.

1st log file is 255 bytes with the following content:
09:04:33.687 Tx 01 06 00 00 00 00
09:04:33.687 Rx 01 86 00 00 13 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00
09:04:33.687 Tx 04 06 01 00 11 00 55 AA 57 4D 4E 42 4D 31 34 2D 53 45 55 43 31 AA 55
09:04:33.703 Rx 04 86 01 00 01 00 FF

2nd log file is zero bytes.

This has been attempted on a real Windows 8, Windows 7 Dell PC, as well as 8 different Windows VM's on Parallels and VMWare on a Mac without success.

So, firmware update never happens, how to fix?

If you already attempted the update from 5.01 (and are receiving error 0004 or the Dongle firmware version reports as 0.00), unplug the wifi dongle and delete the file "BC-WF1..." from the "firmware" directory on your scanner. Leave the dongle unplugged until we issue an update.

rcool: I have no idea why your PC won't see the dongle. I do see that I had left out the step to install the BC_WF1_Updater software, which I just corrected in the instructions. If your dongle was at 5.01 and you've now attempted to update it to 7.28 using the scanner, then the dongle is not going to accept an update from any source until we issue a fix. See the note I quoted to guruuno, above, from the instructions page.

Well try as I may, after 4 days, still can't get the dongle/scanner to connect in infrastructure mode. Will not repeat my previous posts. However, I would like to play with the VLC/RH software. Can this also be done with the scanner in access mode? Any advice appreciated.

We did not issue a fix, yesterday. I just updated the instructions for the existing update.

The first thing I would do is contact Fios and get a newer router. WEP IS NOT SECURE. I have fios here and my router works with WAP2.Also maybe UPman can let us know if the dongle will accept WEP encryption for anyone else having this problem.
