Note that the scanner should not have an IP address of xxx.xxx.xxx.001 if it is Infrastructure mode.
That's correct ONLY if the the gateway address ends in 001. Otherwise, it is perfectly legitimate for a router to issue a DHCP IP address ending in 001.

We are dealing with the masses here and the majority of Home/SOHO routers have the default GW ending in .001 out of the box, there may be some exceptions, but these would be rather rare.

If the person dealing with networking a scanner has a more complex network, they most likely understand this and would not even be running into problems getting simple scanner connected to their network.

Are you trying to update the dongle or use it? If the latter, you want it plugged into the scanner.

The dongle needs plug into the scanner not the laptop for the scanner to see wifi

I updated the dongle yesterday and connected the scanner to my WiFI network and connected with no problem after I added the password. The question I have, when I unplug the the scanner I have to re-enter the password again to connect the dongle to the network. Is this normal?

No, I just tried it with my scanner, unplugged it from the wall and even disconnected the dongle. When it came back up it reconnected no problem after about 10 seconds. Do you just have to reenter the password or do you have to go through the whole wifi setup?

If you enable debug messages in VLC it will show you detailed information about why it failed to connect. You could then submit that information to this forum for help. To enable debug messages in VLC select Tools->Messages from the menu. In the lower left corner of the dialog box that pops up select "2 (debug)" from the combo box next to "Verbosity:". Leave the dialog box open and then try to connect.

You might have already done this but I thought I would repeat the instructions in case you were making a typo or something easy.

Use the menu of the radio and Navigate to Menu=>WiFi Setup=>Show WiFi Information. Check to see what the ip address is. Let's say it's 192.168.0.20.

Next run VLC. Choose the Network Media option.

Enter this into the URL.

"rtsp://192.168.0.20/au:scanner.au"

Notice that the first "au" is separated by a ":" and the second "au" by a "."

This should connect. If it doesn't then either your Windows Firewall or your router Firewall is blocking the stream. Try completely disabling the Firewalls and see if it connects. If it does, then you will need to figure out which ports to leave open in your firewall settings if you want to utilize the vlc software.

ok, VLC is finally working! i simply put the ip address rtsp://192.168.0.xxx/au:scanner.au from my scanner in the network stream box and hit play, and it worked.
before i was going through the work around steps as posted earlier but evidently didn't need to!
VLC is not doing anything fancy, doesn't appear to be recording or anything, just allowing the scanner to stream.
now to see if it will work on my android phone!

Well I got the remote working now and all I have to do is get the streaming to go through the media player. It was decent for Paul to provide new instructions to update the dongle without problems. I am very surprised to see this operating properly. Now I just have to work on getting the audio to stream via the player.

I did the first time I disconnected, but after that, the dongle connected with no problem. You really shouldn't have to enter the password every time.

You are not wrong.
Only one VLC type connection per dongle.

The RH control utility on the other hand can accept several connections.

Hopefully Uniden will find a better streaming method and allow more than one audio stream per device at a time when they release the real version.

You could use VLC to enable Multicast RTP streaming on your network... then you can subscribe to that multicast group from any device on your network at the same time.

FYI for those that are interested, I was able to successfully stream the scanner audio over the internet using VLC. The method I used is noted below and required Port Forwarding.

Streaming BCD536HP Over The Internet Using VLC:

1. Run VLC and click on Media, then Stream in the drop down
2. Click on Network and put rtsp://192.168.1.x/au:scanner.au in the text box (make sure to use your scanner's IP in the url).
3. Click on Stream at bottom right and Stream again in the drop down. Your rtsp url will appear as the source.
4. Click next.
5. Click on File and then choose HTTP in the drop down. Click on Add.
6. The next screen will show the port to be used for streaming (default is 8080) along with a path. I left both at the default. Click Next.
7. On the Transcoding screen, change the profile to Audio - MP3. Click Next.
8. On the Option Setup screen, click Stream. See screen shot below.

NOTE: Port Forwarding of 8080 was set-up on my router and directed to the IP of the PC where VLC is running (not the scanner's IP). Once this was done, I was able to listen to the BCD536HP audio over the internet via any media player using the standard HTTP url protocol: http://routerip:8080 (IP address is the one assigned by your ISP to your router, not the PC's IP). This also allows you to access the stream on your phone/tablet using a scanner app that accepts custom url's.

FYI - The audio is "ok" (a bit tin can sounding) using this method and I have not tried any other audio configuration other than the one noted above. Your mileage may vary. It should be noted that there is also an Icecast streaming option in the drop down under step 5 above, however I could not get that method to successfully establish a connection. Someone else here probably can get that going.

Hope this helps.

Mike

I have tried this multiple times on a Win 7 machine and a Mac Pro and then tried over remote through Teamviewer to my office PC and it won't connect to the stream. I can connect to another stream just fine that I have running 24/7 for a online stream here but can't get VLC to either a) stream properly or b) firewall somewhere is messing things up. Have the port forward in as 'Both' and it was pointed to the proper IP on network also. Will have to keep messing around with it. Hopefully when the actual app comes around there won't be much of a hassle getting it to work outside a local network.

Thanks Mike,

Your method works just fine. Everything is working and audio sounds okay. Using DYNDNS for my router IP address and port forwarded 8080 to the static IP for my scanners laptop.
