I'm very happy to say that Win 97 is functioning well here and I can finally upload and/or download to my Pro 97 and my Pro 164; I've registered and paid the fee.
I still can't access those help pages or any instructions so if anyone has printed any of those or have them in a readable form, I'd really appreciate a note. I use Windows XP and I've tried the fix with the unchecked boxes that was suggested.

Many thanks to the fine scanner people who helped me out!

Win97

I did not even bother with the trial version of WIN97, I just downloaded and registered it all at once. I totally agree that it is well worth $25, or more.

I have no problem accessing HELP files in it here. Did you get your copy from www.starrsoft.com ? Did you get "Win97Help.chm" and is it in the same directory as WIN97.exe? If so it should work for you too.

I wish.
First, I tried Don's fix (several times), fix # 1 didn't do a thing for me and fix # 2 isn't anything like what shows up on my Dell 610 windows XP screen.
I tried to open the help file included in with the win97 folder and it won't open so I dropped it into my office program and it opened up to a page of what looks like hieroglyphics, but I'm not a programmer so I can't translate that stuff.
Why can't a simple help page be a jpeg or plain text or rich text?

Thanks for trying!

The file is listed in WindowsExplorer as 'compiled HTML'. When I click on it, it opens as a help file. Some web browsers should be able to open the file as well.

JPEG? That's ridiculous. There are different file formats to do different things. Use JPEG for pictures, WAV or MP3 for audio, TXT for plain text, ..., etc. PDF could work but then you would need Acrobat (or equiv) installed. The file format used should open up if your computer is working correctly.

LOL. I remember when I started doing computer consulting many years ago. People told me they couldn't use their computers because they did not know how they worked. So I would start asking them questions about auto mechanics and internal combustion engines. That usually got a blank stare in return. I then asked if they drove a car, to which they replied yes. It was apparent they were not auto mechanics .... so why do people need to know how computers work in order to drive them. After thinking about this for a bit; I guess it is because we have to get licenses to drive autos, but not computers. In this case it just means you are not opening the file with the correct application software.

Re: Win97

Heh! You are right. I've been known to do ridiculous things if there's a point and if it fails, no loss. Jpeg works for text and is excellent for explaining a chart or if a small sketch is included in a text, which I have to do on occasion on other hobby lists, particularly if one is sending to non-expert computer operators; it'll open in almost any OS or browser, mac or pc, which is it's best feature, in my opinion.
Thanks for your time, I appreciate it.
