WISCOM OR VHF....That is the question ?

Thank You very much for the info......I am guessing I should monitor VHF 154 MHz and not WISCOM ?

Do you guys have any freqs for cities long the way.....Local channels as you called them ?

What is the problem with WISCOM.....funding ?

Thank You again and if you need info in Florida let me know......

You should monitor WISCOM if you want hear them after the date mentioned above. There will be no patching it sounds like.

I have been monitoring WISCOM up in the Fox Valley area and radio techs were testing State Patrol Statewide channels all afternoon. The radio techs were located throughout the state and hitting different towers on radio checks. It was 95% clear. Heard one tech checking in from Crandon tower. I have also heard intermittent dispatch transmissions on State Patrol Fond du Lac posts 131. Definitely enjoy hearing transmissions on the WISCOM sites as the VHF has been hit or miss.

I happened to be traveling through Wisconsin today and also heard the testing. It started as we passed through Eau Clare and started dropping off around Rockford IL. It was via the I-94 & I-39/90 corridor.

Also picked up some comms from Deforest Post, but kinda sounded like a patch - not crystal clear like you expect from digital.

A couple of questions:

1. There has to be a radio affiliated with, for instance, WSP Spooner Post for that TG to be broadcast on a tower. If a trooper isn't in an area to affiliate with a particular tower then no broadcast. Correct?

2. Has anyone heard anything on the DNR moving? I remember hearing something about fire department issues but what about wardens, etc?

3. Is the WSP still using Kenwoods for mobiles? Going forward will the change and to what?

Thanks ahead of time.

Correct, I do not believe that it will be pushed out to all the tower sites. I know a few counties have certain talkgroups pushed out and STAC1 is but I cannot see that happening. However, I was wrong once before!

3. Is the WSP still using Kenwoods for mobiles? Going forward will the change and to what?

I do believe that the state is moving to the new dual-band EFJ VHF/800 Mhz VP mobiles. Makes sense due to the amount of 800 Mhz systems surrounding the state as well as a few 800 Mhz systems staying on-line with patches and DOC on 800 Mhz.

***NOTE: This info is from shop talk I have heard from some people and I have not taken the time, nor do I want to, to confirm this information. However, I have no reason to believe that it is not good at face value.***

1. Unless the talkgroup is made critical, this means on selected sites the talkgroup will always be transmitted. SCALL1 is Critical on all sites. This is used to for certain daily users on main talkgroups main law channel and main fire channel.

2. There are Wardens using the System, The fire side of things have done some testing but I am not sure on future plans.

3. WSP has installed EFJ Viking Mobiles now for use on teh system, the Kenwood radio issues was one of the main reasons for leaving the system. (Since JVC Kenwood own EFJ the EFJ radios are now going to say Kenwood on them, so technically they have Kenwoods.) At least the radios have not been touched by Kenwood engineers.

As the others mentioned there are several talkgroups that a forced out to a defined set of sites, all the way from statewide to region or areawide and down to countywide or even a subset of that. It all depends on the specified use for the talkgroup and what benefit there would be to it being active when there is not an affiliated radio on a site.

Judging from the testing and when the patches were up it would be logical the dispatch talkgroups will be forced district wide both for the benefit of other agencies wanting to scan them and also for the troopers to be able to hear dispatch when on a tactical talkgroup or local agency talkgroup.

2. Has anyone heard anything on the DNR moving? I remember hearing something about fire department issues but what about wardens, etc?

As was mentioned Wardens are using the system, both for intra-department communications and local agency communications if dispatched on WISCOM. As you can expect their talkgroups are not forced to sites and only used sporadically when needed.

Fire Control is still currently dispatched on analog although there has increasingly been more use of WISCOM for operations and even dispatching in some cases due to coverage, repeater issues, or general traffic management.

The primary WSP dispatch TGs (WSPxx1) are "critical" (pushed out) on all towers in the region (possibly excepting some county owned sites).

All State Patrol posts will be switching at that time.

I hope so, listening to the old WSP system is not fun, and honestly i actually like the sound of the WISCOM digital better :). pleasing to hear this, very pleasing. N9NRA

From the Chilton VHF site and Chilton 800 MHz site:

Fond Du Lac Post live on TG131 WSPNE1, with some car-to-car traffic on TG132 WSPNE2.

Wausau Post live on TG 141 WSPNC1.

Eau Claire Posr sounds good on TG 151.

Has anyone heard Spooner Post? They were on TG157 the first time around. I thought I would maybe hear them off of Holcombe tower but I'm either to far away or it isn't being broadcast on Holcombe.

Curious how they sound.

Milwaukee area wiscom

As of today in the metro Milwaukee area I am monitoring the following:
121 from the Milwaukee VHF, Greenfield VHF & 800, and Delefield; Delefield site is also 111. I'm not able to receive the Milw 800 and Bayside 800 due to a nasty tower by my QTH which causes lots of digital hash in the 800 band. Still hearing some occasional traffic of units calling dispatch on VHF 154.665 (pl 103.5), however no dispatcher traffic heard.

Been hearing Wausau on TG 141, along with some further testing on various TG`s off of Rib Mtn. All sound really good. Also, for some reason i`m hearing Northeast 1 (FDL post) off the Rib Mountain site too, they pushing the dispatch TG`s to all sites? If so that would be intresting, i could hear the Spooner one from here, great way to keep up with what`s happening around NW WI :D. N9NRA
