Hello all. I'm a new FT991A owner and stepping up from a HT its been fantastic but a bit of a learning curve. Now that I'm comfortable with general operation I'd like to tweak some of my settings to improve audio quality (mainly RX, TX sounds good with just mic gain).

For now, I operate primarily on UHF/VHF in FM using repeaters or simplex nodes. I'm getting strong signals with good modulation but hearing a lot of noise (static, crackle, pops) on some repeaters as well as a constant low hum when I use the audio out the USB port in the back to my PC.

I've seen videos on youtube of the various filters (NB, DNR, DNF etc) but it seems these don't work on FM (only USB/SSB etc)? Can someone help me understand the reason for this or if there is a way to enable?

I'd also like to better understand the parametric EQ (is this for RX or TX?) and are there any general settings that would improve audio clarity for UHF/VHF wide FM (I know these will vary wildly depending on a number of variables but a good baseline would be helpful)?

Any other tips on improving RX audio for UHF/VHF FM would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you all in advance for any help you're able to provide.

For those searching the forum in the future, this is what I've come to thus far. Noise blanker works on FM but only below 137Mhz (still not 100% clear on why). Re Parametric EQ's after digging through tons of other forums and talking with an audio engineer friend here are the settings I've come up with:

Menu Description Value
119 EQ1 Freq 200
120 EQ1 Level 9
121 EQ1 BWTH 8
122 EQ2 Freq 1000
123 EQ2 Level 7
124 EQ2 BWTH 8
125 EQ3 Freq 2000
126 EQ3 Level 5
127 EQ3 BWTH 4
128 EQ1 Freq 100
129 EQ1 Level 10
130 EQ1 BWTH 3
131 EQ2 Freq 700
132 EQ2 Level -3
133 EQ2 BWTH 7
134 EQ3 Freq 3200
135 EQ3 Level 10
136 EQ3 BWTH 2
