The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

"i posed the question on another forum and the above is the culmination of our brain storming."

That perfectly explains the existence of this thread. As we all know when one suffers a lightning strike he rarely survives but those who do almost always suffer irreparable nerve damage and impaired brain function.

So thats what happen to you !

I'm surprised that I'd never seen this subject come up until now, however I had contemplated a crossband repeater that had FRS on one side and CB on the other (a vehicular repeater setup, primarily). No, I don't know how legal/illegal this would be. No, I never bothered constructing it (mostly because I don't have much of a use for it anymore). However, it would be neat.

Why would you want to do split site for an 11 meter repeater. You could have four sets of three 55 gallon steel drums welded together and then the insides silver plated for a great big four cavity duplexer. Is it legal? See the line below.

Why spoil the beauty of the thing with legality?

it is actually legal under part 15 of the fcc rules. think it is 10000uV/m @ 30m??? and under part 15 you can actually use FM!!!!

how far it would go??? who knows. would be a nice experiment. i have heard of people building part 15 beacons on CB it comes out to something like 1.8 mW to the antenna terminals of a 1/2 wave dipole.

Legal ...

I can think of at least one instance where an 11meter repeater would have been both legal and useful. After Katrina we had church-sponsored S&R/work crews on the Gulf coast and not nearly enough licensed hams to include one with each crew. There was no communication between most crews and base. Many of these had CBs and most of you probably have one or two on a garage shelf. A cross-band 11 to 2 meter would have been of immense value and would have been allowed by the FCC during this time... now if I could have the mods ready, just not implemented ...

And illegal. Try GMRS or FRS or MURS or train your work crews as hams, or get your own frequencies and cache.

You're dreaming or know nothing about the rules to say it would have been allowed. NONSENSE

Its not only illegal by the rules, but its totally impractical... No CB's will do duplex like that anyway. Unless you get an old crystal radio that actual uses seperate transmit and receive crystals so you can mix and match the crystals to make a duplex pair on a channel. But good luck with that...

Perhaps..

FCC did "allow" the use of ham bands for S&R immediately after Katrina by non-hams. Whether it was legal or not you might argue but it WAS allowed and will always be allowed where loss of human life is eminent. I remember at least one question on my General exam that stated as such. Perhaps you took one of the "new" tests.

And when my crews come from all over the world to help save lives I'm not gonna turn them away because they don't have a tech ticket.

... Nevermind

Perhaps you might think about this a little longer. I bet you can come up with a way to implement this without modifying any CB's. Hint: Forget duplex. Another hint: It's already been done.

Why?

Where would I find a CB that does duplex?

Why would you need one?

Hint #3: Google "MFJ-662"

From the responses thus far I'm thinking that maybe I shouldn't share anything else in this forum. It seems a lot more like a black hat debate than a forum for idea exchange.

Not to get off topic here, but split-frequency on ssb 11 meters was pretty common in the 70's and 80's. Transmit on ch.40 and receiving on ch.32,using separate ssb radios, etc.
All the am'ers hated it but it worked well, considering the bandwidth that was used!

Back in the 90s I help a guy with built one out of his house. It was just for fun and we never shared it with the general CB world. We tried it on the mobile end with a 2 meter hand held and with a ranger 2950 which supports split frequencies. We used a VOX mic which we hardwired to the receiver radio at the base set to a frequency above ch 40, but below 28 mhz. The problem we had was the transmitter at the base kept bleeding over on the receiver at the base. It worked, but you could hear the bleed-over even going close to the ham bands especially if we tried to run any power which sort was the whole point of doing it. The HF radio worked much better, but then two radios in the mobile was needed as we never did an 11 meter uplink to 2 meters at the base. As you could guess simulcasting the CB band on 2 meters wouldn't fly with the FCC for long. The problem with the 11 meter band is that it is so dirty and its signals get into everything.

When I saw this thread I knew people were going to put their 2 cents in about it being illegal. Just like they do about listening to phones conversations, encrypted or inverted radio transmissions or anything else the government doesn't like us doing. I personally could care less if something along these lines is against the law so long as it is not hurting anyone. No one is going to know what I'm listening to in the privacy of my own home and any long time CB knows the FCC doesn't do much to people on the 11meter band. Yes I know they have been cracking down in recent years, but the truly careless individuals are the ones that get caught. Yes if you allowed a repeater to be used by the general CB world it would get shut down soon enough, but for personal use or amongst a small group of friends especally for short term use you will be probably be fine.

As for people flaming this guy I agree with others if you don't like this thread just ignore it. Also am I the only one that finds some of the people on this site somewhat rude and edgy? I know us geeks tend to get annoyed with what we might find to be stupidity from others, but some of these post are uncalled for. To me you just end up looking like someone that gets picked on in real life and act like an internet tough guy at night behind your computer screen. Oh and no I am not leaving as this site has some great info. ;)

Simplex Repeater | Argent Data Systems

You seem to lack a good understanding of the differences in AM and FM and how their respective receivers work.

I'm guessing that you don't own a 2-meter that can do AM? Has nothing whatsoever to do with the discussion anyway. I don't claim to be a radio engineer but I do know how to make a simplex repeater that will repeat 11meter to 2meter FM or AM. It has nothing to do with encoding via frequency or amplitude. I'm just receiving the audio from one radio and putting it out using the transmitter of the other radio. I can repeat 11meter on any HF freq(legal or otherwise) as well. If you can't then who really lacks understanding here? We haven't even discussed software-based radios. Do you want to argue that you couldn't do this from a FLEX or any other software-based radio? You could do any of this and much, much, more if you have the SDK and don't mind getting your coding fingers dirty.

I agree completely, responsible people experiment and have fun and idiots get caught and create problems for the good guys.
