Just after 4:30 March 19th a fire was reported in a warehouse located near Gratiot & French Road. Engine 50 was 1st due and immediately declared the fire "doubtful". Shortly after that, Battalion Chief 9 requested a 2nd alarm.
Fire quickly spread through the 1500' X 500" warehouse that media reports indicate is a company that recycles plastic products. Blue and purple flames could be seen coming from smoke stacks on top of the building and several small explosions were heard. Several hydrants on Gratiot were not functional, water was a limited commodity.
Due to the large amount of fire and limited water, firefighters were forced to take a defensive approach. As of 10:00 pm, no injuries were reported.
