Hey guys,

just a couple quick questions. I have a 396 that i purchased used and it doesnt seem to decode p25. It displays like it is decoding it however there is nothing coming out of the speaker xcept a low garble noise. It will handle analog transmission on the same system but no p25. I had tried tweaking the digital settings with no luck. I am wondering how to do a factory reset to get it back to stock for one more attempt before it goes in for warranty service. Anyone ever experienced a faulty unit in this aspect>? I own 3 other Uniden's 396/996/bct-15 so i know how they work and how to program them and know im doing it properly.

Thanks

What type of antenna are you using?
Are you programming it using software or are you programming it by hand?
Are you certain you chose "P25" as the system, and not Conventional or Motorola or Edacs?
How far is the site from your location in miles, and how many signal bars are you getting?

You mention analog and P25 on the same system. I'm a bit confused on this one. I think you can only setup a system on a 396T to receive one or the other but not both on a single system (somebody correct me if I'm wrong).

I would work on these before you come to the conclusion that there is something wrong with the device itself.

The clue here is that the OP has other 396 radios and knows what he is doing (they receive on the same channels presumably). My guess is something is defective.

2, 9, HOLD, and turn on the radio should dump memory and reset to defaults.

You may want to check the firmware version also to see if you have the latest version.

Shut off CTCSS/DCS

The 396t will not decode p25 signals if the CTCSS/DCS is set to search, turn it off.

Good guess Saint but that didnt solve it.... I did a reset and still no go. I hear the speaker pop and the machine gunning but no voice, just low low garble. I believe it is defective as my others are working fine with the same antenna's. I will send back to uniden and hopefullly they will fix it.

Your P25 auto setting should be the same as your 996. You did check that correct?

I was hopping that was the problem so you won't have to send the scanner back, also make sure you contact Uniden and asked them for a repair number so you can track the progress and if you have any problems you can give them the number they gave you.

Yep, everything is the same as my 996 and my 396. I have programmed 5 other 396's on the same system with no problems at all. It must be defective and will be going back. Thanks for all the quick responses tho, much appreciated.
