It's been about 9-11 months since I started this project. Some of my developers have moved on or lost interest.

I am looking for new developers for this scanner.

Thanks,

Two really nice things that only AOR and Icom seem to address.

A well buffered IF output, something below 30 MHz and wide banded...in the area of 250kHz or more bandwidth would be ideal.

Discriminator output, and while we're talking audio output, use isolation transformers on them so ground hums aren't an issue for people connecting them all over for processing or recording.

Another suggestion, when possible, don't board mount interfaces like DC supply jacks (12V btw is very convenient for hams) or selector controls and audio jacks. This way they are easily replaced and any stress on them from use isn't wearing solder joints on a board trace.

Just some developers would be nice.

Especially people with backrounds design & development in RF electronics from 30MHZ to 1.3GHZ.

I have the money set aside to build a couple sets right now, but we just need to nail down specific component parts and usage.

I liked the idea of adding the discriminator tapped output so that people wouldn't have to hack that in later.

USB for power and data transfer. More and more electronic devices are using USB, so it would just make sense for scanners to do the same. No more proprietary chargers and data cables. Why use separate cables for power and data when you can get both in one cable?

Bluetooth for audio and data transfer. It would be great to be able to listen with a set of bluetooth headphones and to program wirelessly. Just like USB, bluetooth is becoming more and more common in electronic devices, so I see no reason it couldn't be implemented in a scanner.

We talked about using USB for saving of data files for storage.. maybe also as back up of its internal system files (RAM/ROM, etc.). Me, I hate those proprietary cargers and cables. I don't want any of my scanners' users to have to buy something special in the way of cables.

Some people develop systems where you have to enter into a system menu to enter a option unlock code to unlock options. I want to steer away from that too.

I'm not sure about the bluetooth.. but I'm sure it could be done. USB Data transfer to and from the PC would work great. We could also build both ISA (for owners of DOS systems) and PCI & PCI type interface cards for the PC & Mac (for those that own newer Macintosh computers)..

I'm still also not sure what to include in the control & logging software.

Personally, I think a 700/800 Mhz only P25 unit with a nice display and plenty of memory with a heavy focus on RF performance is a neglected market niche. Look at the number of people that talk about using Motorola or M/A-Com commercial products because of the superior RF and audio characteristics despite the massive programming issues and other scanning related limitations.

The IF output suggestion is for those using SDR receivers that work in the HF bands. This allows the scanner to be the front end for VHF+ IF while viewing on the SDR panadapter.

Something like this software that I use.

You simply have an IF at say 10.7 MHz and tune the SDR to that frequency. Then you tune the band with the scanner and the scanner's LO is centered on the panadapter display. Then you simply hack a quick app together so that you can tune the SDR, and sync the control to move the LO on the scanner to match where you click on the display.

Don't close the thread yet :)

I'd like to see a dash mounted scanner that's also an AM/FM/CD player. The radio would play AM or FM or CD, and when the squelch breaks on the scanner side of the radio, I hear that, and then when it goes back to scanning, the AM or FM or CD starts playing again. Seperate antenna jack for the scanner if you want, but I would be happy to use the car's AM/FM antenna for the scanner side.

lol, this thread is so ridiculous. Say this person does actually have the money to build the hardware.... I still say a new company can hardly have the budget to implement opensky. I mean, the scanner market is small enough, this narrows it even more dramatically. I stand firm and say we never see a unit. Let's hope im wrong :)

So what your saying is i can monitor that annoying encrypted stuff out there? If so I hope to see it sooner then later. And charge N_Jay double for one.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPod; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7D11 Safari/528.16)

Lol. Yay encryption breaking! I will definitely take out a loan if I have to for this scanner.

I guess this thread has become an institution.

If it hasn't been mentioned, I'd love to see a sleep timer or auto shut-off, so I won't wake up to dead batteries. It wouldn't necessarily need a clock circuit, just a relative timer.
