Mike-

I would be willing to guess that the majority of users of ADS-B / Mode-S receivers ARE simultaneously scanning the airwaves, or are using RR to "sync" audible radio ATC transmissions with visual data on-screen. In fact, I would presume that like me, many airband scanners started by listening to, recording, and feeding radio transmissions and soon realized that the ADS-B technology enables us to "see" A/C within a 150 mile radius (vs. perhaps a 30 mile radius on the best day with the average scanner and a decent antenna).

30nm range? Whoa, you don't know what your missing! :) I get 150 all the way east on one center sector, and I'm all the way to the side of it! You must be talking about the ground transmitter site for 30 miles.

Anyways, I'm glad to see everyone elses input.... good to see that they are putting it to use! I'm just about to reposition my setup once I get the PC fixed, it will extend my coverage to the west a lot, so I'll have about 100nm+ on all sides. May not seem good, but the mountains are a PITA to get out of! Sure Mark will appreciate it :)

I'm plotting ADS-B and ACARS at 180nm all day long. (Even further at times)

ADS-B - Using SBS-1er and DPD 1090Mhz antenna 30' up. (Thank you Mark)

ACARS - Whether using an old Uniden BC2500XLT, or the built-in receiver on the SBS-1er, I'm pulling in the signal fine using a $30 RadioShack 20-176 antenna 20' up.

Sharing everything on PP and PlaneFinder.net.

What I've really thought was cool, was when I spotted a U2 in the list. I've now seen three different one's in the last two months since I found out about ACARS/ADS-B.

Yes, I'm talking about ground transmissions, the crucial "other half" of the communication. And 30nm on a good day with few obstructions and an antenna with some serious elevation.

I'm always happy to see people sharing data, but I gotta say: the most interesting sharing site is Albert's Military Air planes with Mode-S ADS-B because it's historical: you can look up a code and find where it was over the last few years. I urge anyone who has one of the boxes to consider sharig your data "forever" ... :)

I received an email saying I was selected to participate but never heard anything else.

Hi Guys,

Just a quick update to say thanks for all of your help and support.
We supplied quite a few receivers to members on this site and I've made a few friends too.
We will have another batch of receivers soon and are still keen to extend coverage and fill some gaps.
Our advert free website at planefinder.net - Real Time Live Air Traffic Flight Radar has also just been updated with new features such as playback so you can see the coverage there.

Thanks again for your help and support.

Guys,

Mark is a great guy to work with.
I have been sending him data for some time.
Great when you get free hardware for a good guy.

I second this :)

Mark was very patient during some technical difficulties at one of my stations and he is easy to get a hold of for questions.

Where is Planefinder.net getting its flight route data? I am seeing a lot of erroneous routes in my vicinity.

For example, a flight from Denver to Las Vegas would never overfly Albany, NY.
