and find it to be pretty accurate and trust worthy. Norton hogs up the system badly. Bitdefender, haven't tried it lately, but from the posts elsewhere, it may be worth trying. It's free.

there are several versions of BD, a free "mini-scanner" that just watches, alerts you then sanitizes the threat.

or there is the AV Plus version, which is essentially BD Free + manual controls and some extra features.

then there is BD Internet Security, AV, Ad/spy/mal-ware protection and basic online features

then, there is the boss version

BD Total Security. this is what i have. my laptop, desktop, media server and my DROID Turbo all have BD Total Protection.

this includes: AV, ad/spy/mal-ware detection, protection deletion, anti-theft online services ( excellent features which ill describe in a bit ) , a "sand-box" for securing sensitive and important files in BD's cloud storage in a completely secured method, network controls and firewall, drive encryption and many more.

The Anti-theft features are kickass!

if you have a device with BD Total Security on it. you can do any of the following

if laptop or mobile device with a camera:

Track and locate in real time <-- for those who have the means to secure their own devices without police help :p LOL!!

lock with pin/password and prevent power down ( certain non-removable battery devices )

"Scream" function ( i tested this on my phone - it started a ear-piercing screeching sound, then started a voice saying - " I am a stolen device " repeatedly <-- EPIC ! )

Take Photo and notify nearest LEO ( this function will take photos until a close range face is detected and then report its location to BD who then finds the local LEO and notifies them with the information presented )

Wipe Device/Drive <-- self explanatory

Encrypt Device/Drive <-- again ... DUH

desktop installs have all but the photo function and "Scream" functions.

Bit Defender was rated the #1 consumer security software and the #3 overall when compared to Commercial and "Data-center" grade assets, which NOD-32 and F-Secure topped the #2 and best scores.

I have stuck by Bit Defender's side for about 4 years now, not a single hiccup in security breaches.

Thanks Cap for the great info of BD.

I like that "Scream" function you wrote about too! Actually it all sounds far fetched though, lol.
Have read that BD is well worth the money and I think I'm going to give it try in a couple of weeks. My neighbor has the free version and he said it works just as well as the free AVG, (which I am using at this moment). Thanks for posting the differences in their product, I appreciate it.

AVG

yet AVG has the worst if not close to the worst detection and removal rate.

Yeah ok, I ran AVG on a PC after removing Norton's full security suite and it found 126 viruses. When done the person was thrilled how much faster their computer was.So I doubt AVG is a bad antivirus. The free version probably
sells your data but what do you want for free?
And about Norton and McAfee they Are resource hogs, look at the memory you need to run it on the box,the security suites are the worst, perhaps the Antivirus alone is not as bad but most people buy the suites.A crummy no memory computer will be brought to its knees with these two.

If you have to trade something (like letting someone else have or sell your personal information) in order to have/use the product, then the product is not truly free; it's bartering.

Just one opinion,

and i would lay $$$$ right in-front of you i could scan that same drive right after your AVG with BD and find even more stuff in both manual and automatic scans.

lets not forget the 200+ computers that have been brought to me that had AVG on them, both free and payware versions that even the most SIMPLEX of digital baddies AVG never even saw.

one computer, had over 713 hits of problems that AVG simply FAILED to stop, things that even a basic user could stop with a simple command.

well...

I had hoped to put this one to bed by now. I installed the free version of BitDefender...with some difficulty. The third d/l (all from the BD site) finally wasn't corrupted and installed properly. When it finally did scan the drive...which puzzles me as I'd think when you told it to do this, it would do it then and not hours later, which is what this one did...it found nothing. I installed MalwareBytes and it did find a handful of stuff that shouldn't have been there. This was all after removing AVG and Spybot S&D and cleaning up the registry with RegSeeker.

The machine is still a bit slow, especially just after getting online and for the next several minutes. I can't find anything that is updating to cause this. It eventually gets better, which is somewhat the same behavior I was having with the other apps. It's less noticeable now but definitely still there.

I guess I will go ahead and get the full version of both apps and hopefully that will finally find and cure the problems. But I really expected something more dramatic to happen with these, considering how the machine has been behaving lately, and all the recommendations here. I'm using Windows 7X64 and it is up to date.

I've been using Malware Anti-Malware for five years and it has caught a lot of viruses before they caused problems. The software is by Cleverbridge.com

so it ran the scan "hours" after you commanded it to? <-- that is something i would send a notification to Tech Support for.

the free edition or "light" does not scan the same items as MBAM ( Malware Bytes ) and S&D, its looking for core virus and the like.

cookies, spyware, ad-ware, malware and any of those, it is not looking for.

the corrupted downloads i cannot comment on. too many unknown variables there.

im curious about this install being corrupted twice. if you are willing to layout your hardware and network setup, ill gladly help.

@henzo, you are talking about the same thing we are,

Malware BYTES, Anti Malware or MBAM

I understand the differentiation between antivirus and anti-malware. I wouldn't expect the two apps to detect the same things.

After I ordered a folder scan for my user folder, it just sat there. I rebooted, came back, and it was still queued but nothing. Finally went to bed, elapsed time about 2 hours with no action at all but it had completed the scan by the next morning so yes, hours. It did perform a full scan on demand after I posted that.

Corrupted executables can be a fact of life. If I'd got it from cnet or download.com I wouldn't have been surprised. I think it was just luck of the draw and it did finally install so no foul. But that made me wonder if it was really a bad .exe or if something was trying to block it. That made me think it was going to find something, so mild surprise that it did not.

Nothing fancy here, just a Compaq CQ57 laptop that's got some years on it. No network at present. I get online via a Verizon Jetpack, that being the only viable option here since I dislike Hughes and the long-awaited DSL is a little better than dial-up, but not much.:( But that's the down side of living in the boonies and for me the advantages more than outweigh it.

I'll probably let the trial versions run down for awhile and then upgrade. Things do seem improved now and I'm sure a memory upgrade would help. Thanks for the advice.:D

AntiMalware

To CapStar362--I have the Pro version of MalWareAnti-Malware, which is paid subscription per year. It has more deeper scan than the free version. It has a notifier box which alerts you to suspicious web sites as you download it. I find the alerts very useful when downloading web sites . I cancel it to be on the safe side. All said and done, that's what I have. I have Windows8.1 system

No it does not, the only difference is the paid version has real time protection like your antivirus software.

Web site Protection

There is no software that I know of that gives you 100% protection on your PC! Have you tried Best Software Protection web site? It lists the most reliable software available for 2015. Most won't give you 100% protection! Keep looking!!

exactly, try again henzo.

we know these products very well. you have the same type of scans in both free and pro, the pro just gives you real time scanning which it does in the background without user intervention to start one while you do things and on boot if you choose it.

got a link for that "Best Protection Software"

and you are right about 100% Coverage, the only 100% coverage is unplugging from the net.

I have Zone Alarm and it worked very well up until June this year. Zone Alarm did an 'up grade' in June, and I lost ALL printing capabilities. No mater what printer I tried, just would hang an no printing. Further examination by a Microsoft guru, found Zone Alarm had corrupted the printing part of XP SP3. No going back, have to do a full loading of the OS.

what exactly did the update change? is ZA aware of this? i would write them.
The 'update' was a install over the existing ZA I think. I DID contact ZA, and they say "XP is not supported so I am SOL". In fact the so called guru got very pissed that I knew more about ZA killing the printing part of XP than he did.
There have been numerous screens coming up to update, nor more updates for me.
I am following this thread so I can get something better that works on XP when I do a complete reload of the OS.

Best Protection Software

Cmdrwill: Your problem will only get worse as time goes on. My only suggestion is to install Windows7, since it is still supported. XP is done!!
