To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Do you have a schematic of the XTS5000 pgm cable?

I also have some unlabeled JEDI connector to 9 pin serial connector cables that I need to ring out the wires.
A couple have curly cords...

While the cable may or may not be a problem.... as was stated in earlier post. The XTS 5000 CPS will NOT be able to read/program the XTS 3000. It is a different a program.

Cmdrwill has the right software. He just needs to buy the right cable.

Did you check Batlabs?

Pretty sure the cable has some smarts built into it and you won't be able to duplicate it.

You did look at the schematic and realize there's a chip inside it?

Yes, in the schematic you referred to. Doesent seem to be a chip inside the ones I have.

I got a new Kwawa cable and was able to read one of the XTS5000's.

Now here is the rub, The newer, 2002 Dec radio reads fine. The 2000 feb radio reads and the CPS comes up with an error stating need to upgrade the CPS. And this is the older radio ect....

Update: The Astro 25 Tuner reads the radio and returns Host Ver R14.00.03 and DSP ver R14.00.00. I can make tuning adjustments on it.

CPS12 will not read that radio as you've figured out. You'll need to upgrade to at least R14 CPS or newer.

How do you determine that? Remember the one that would not read in CPS is the OLDER one, 2002......

I believe you said the older one was readable with tuner and it has r14 host? It doesn't matter how old the radio is, what matters is the host inside it.

If it has R14 host, you must use R14 or greater CPS. Whenever a major Host update is done, Motorola releases new CPS.

You cannot use an older version of CPS on newer firmware. It will not understand any newer features and most likely, it will not understand any codeplug structure changes.

You must either upgrade your CPS as your error message states or rollback the codeplug version which probably isn't going to happen.

Your best bet is to purchase the latest CPS from Motorola.

OK,Sir that gives me a clue that the old radio has later firmware in it. And a easy way to check the ver with tuner.
So I will use Ver 14 on THAT radio. But I do NOT have that so I will send it back,
AKA NRTS......

Mike, thanks for all the help, I usually do NOT work on the later Motorola stuff.

An even easier way is to access the radio service screens by pushing the bottom, side button in 5 times just after the radio boots.

Hello and greetings to all. I have been out of the radio scene for the past few years, over here in the Southern Philippines completing my Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree (as there is a 5 year backlog to even begin the Nursing Program at nearly every university in the USA). Anyway, does anyone know if there is a USB cable available to program the Motorola XTS3000 and ASTRO Saber? My only laptop computer now does not have any serial ports on it, so using my Polaris RIB and cables won't work too well anymore. I will also need a USB cable to program my BC396D and Kenwood TH-F6A, if they make such cables.
