Seriously at first take an evasive maneuver, then maybe attempt to apprehend the thrower.

Interestingly you can't in a lot of those cases. If you jump out from the line to snag someone in a protest/riot situation, you're likely to get dragged into the crowd and beaten senseless. It's sort of perverse, but a riot is exactly the one weird situation where people can throw a brick at a cop and not immediately feel the consequences... bit of a headscratcher.

Photo: thanks, based on the TG number and that, I think that's likely the one they were talking about.

That makes sense .... my training was not in riot/crowd control.

My training was purely offensive in a military nature.
( so I would turn my tank towards them and mow them down! LOL - just kidding )

I guess in that civilian setting you would take evasive action to avoid contact with the object if possible ..... hold your ground .... then hope that video will help you ID the throwers after things are quelled.

Surprised that none of the interoperability channels are being used. I've seen them active in the past for citywide type events.

Needed to have 8 scanners to listen for any activity on them last night.

The first 7 where frozen on

9110 bolo alert
9101 central
9111 event traffic
9130 Western C
MD Tac 4 on FiRST
123.025 helicopter coordination
Baltimore news frequencies (which had their own helicopters flying in addition to 2 police units.)

The first 4 of those scanners never stopped talking. Wasn't much dead air on the other 3 either.

There were times when there was an awful lot of helicopter traffic.

May be a protest at 6pm in Eastern district to protest the arrests that were made yesterday. Some of current shift in a number of districts being held over.

What amazes me (thankfully) that Baltimore City doesn't have any fully encrypted talkgroups for incidents like this. I thought about lack of encryption also during the 1812 Celebrations.

To add to your list a couple of the Narcotics/Vice/Surveillance Channels were also used throughout the protest in assistance.

Yes. There wete a few more. I forgot B6 Event for fire. I noticed that was intermittently active as was 9133 PD Event 1.

At some point, even if you have enough scanners running, you can't listen to everything. The Bolo channel appears to be the main command channel as it is this evening.

Apparently there are some protesters this evening and the PD appear to be preparing for something. Had helicopter up all afternoon.

I noticed some Montgomery County Police units in riot gear near the stadium yesterday. I wonder if they were using radios from a cache... Their portables would not work in Baltimore, unless they were using some kind of simplex interop channel - did anyone notice any activity on the nationwide 8TAC channels?

I had them running. I heard some digital noise on 2 and 5 but nothing else.

Montgomery, PG, Howard, and Anne Arundel were all contributors to the force. Do any have regular City capability?
I know AA does for fire so I assume they do for PD. Not sure about the others.

Pretty calm discussion on MD Tac 4 last night, even though I noticed state trooper in the moving police line with Baltimore PD.

How is that 996P2 treating you?

I think they picked up city radios once in the city.

Working tough, just like the 996xt. Have them in a rack one over top the other and can't tell them apart since I feed the same programming to both.

It does a great job on FiRST AACO site. Always sharp and never any digital Donald duck. I think it sounds better than the 536. I think both decode it as well but the 996p2 tone is clearer.

I see Ham Radio Outlet has them for $340 now, which is basically the 996xt price.

Understand a firmware update is about to come out to handle a situation where the radio has troubles finding the p2 voice channel when scanning a p2 site and anything else. I can't seem to duplicate that problem with FiRST as the p2 system but it apparently effects many p2 sites as they are already reviewing for a firmware solution.

Since I don't have a problem, it's one of those "should I risk the firmware update or not" situations.

Oh yay.

BTW, RE the encryption comment: remember, for encryption to be used on a net, all radios using that net have to have the same keyfill to be able to track the traffic. If MdTA doesn't have BPD's current keyfill, they'd be SOL for monitoring anything encrypted using the BPD fill.

Lots of activity on the channels starting. Sounds like another protest is happening/soon to happen.

Edit: Most activity seems to be at Mondawmin Mall.

PG County, Anne Arundel, Montgomery, Baltimore County have all sent dozens of officers.

MSP has sent 82 officers.
