Someone correct me if I am wrong, but my understanding was WiFi connection was for controlling scanner like a remote head or streaming audio back through the mobile device app. Updates, favorites lists, and software uploads all have to be done through a Windows computer running Sentinel software.

You can do this, yes. The software is available already and many of us have "prepared" by doing exactly what you described.

I haven't tried going the other direction, though.

In the Home Patrol Sentinel go to File -> Export to hpe file.
In the BCDx36HP Sentinel go to File -> Import from hpe file

Got the new Sentinal downloaded in my PC looks pretty good on Old XP machine Bear

I’m hoping with the ap for the Iphone that the scanner may become accessible for Blind users. I wonder if there is testing going on with voice over.

I'm looking forward to the WiFi for the 536. The way I will have it mounted in my Tahoe, the scanner will be sitting low but my iPhone is dash mounted at road level. I'll be able to see what channel it's on without taking my eyes off the road. Also I can monitor when I get out of my vehicle for convince store runs or hanging at friends house. Can't wait for the possibilities.

BC-RH96 remote head

Will the BC-RH96 remote head work on the BCD536HP? It would be very lame if I have to go buy another new remote head, and I refuse to use a "smart" phone as a remote head.

It's been discussed many times before. At this point there doesn't look like there will be a new remote head. The push is to use smartphones and tablets to replace them.

The lack of a remote head is a 95% deal breaker, I do not have or will ever have a smartphone or tablet, so I guess the 396xt and 996xt (real scanners) will be my last unidens. maybe whistler will step up with a SCANNER, and if they do I hope they look better then GRE scanners lol.

So buy an ipod and call it a "remote head". Odds are it
will cost less than the RH-96 (which is not WiFi capable).

The new scanners have remote heads. They just aren't
dedicated only to that task. They do other things, too.

GRE's history of remote heads (never made them) doesn't
make the likelihood of Whistler making one very high.

Awesome? Yes, it would since the hardware does not exist in those models. The day a firmware update adds hardware is the day scanners will be made on your home 3D electronics printer (which is nearly possible these days).
