Too bad Costco isn't in the business of selling these scanners. They do sell Uniden products and Whistler products.

Morning UPMan-

The GPS unit for the HP1 will also work in this new 536? Really like the fact that you have gone back to a flat compact design. I have a dashboard of a Kenworth T660 to deal which means a lot of double sided tape and bungee cords. That HP1 is just not conducive for a truck so thanks for the redesign.

I don't think the HP-1 was ever intended to replace the BCD996XT, and likewise I don't think the BCD536HP is a replacement for the HP-1. You could easily make the case that the BCD536HP is a fusion of all the best of those two units.

I've always believed the HP1 to be a 'test bed' for the unique technologies contained within, and it was always the plan to incorporate that tech into a 'normal' form factor scanner.

You could always go for the handheld design with the 436 to make installation in car easier.

Nope. That's much harder. Company tractor= no drilling or tapping. Double sided tape and bungee cords- the truckers true friends. I have that 396T- could not get where I could see it and work it.

I have a question on what kind of range I should expect with the WIFI dongle when used in the "remote vehicle head" configuation.

Let's say I install at BCD536HP in my vehicle and I configure an iPhone to act as the remote control head. Should I expect the iPhone to control the scanner only when it is in the vehicle or could I anticipate being able to control the scanner while out of the vehicle, such as while cutting grass at home and being within 75-100 feet of the vehicle?

Wi-Fi is tough ... it is unpredictable. Unfortunately, the 2.4GHz band is susceptible to interference and blockage by water and we are 6 foot columns of water. Then you have the natural Faraday Cage that car poses to a radio wave.

If you're lucky, you could get it to work from pretty far away. I have worked my GoPro camera from my iPhone from over one block away (line of sight) but I also run an extensive Wi-Fi system at work and even under an access point we can have issues. YMMV

So in theory...i could set up the 536 as an access point in my vehicle. Sit in my office and use my app to listen to my channels like local access point. Or mount it at home and connect wireless-ly to my router at home and use my app anywhere with my smart phone On 4g? So owners' of a 536 that connects at their home or office to their 536 could In essance broadcastify ? Hence they are now tied into the net....figuretively ???

Not the way I read it as long as your phone and 536 are on same local network it will work I don't see you making it work over the internet via data plan

An IP connection is an IP connection :) it doesn't matter which mechanism you use (Wi-Fi, 3G, 4G, LTE)

As long as the radio is on the network, and your phone has Internet access, they'll meet. As UPMan said, they are still working out the details but it will work similarly to the way TeamViewer or their own (Uniden's) Web Cams work. There will be a common meet me point on the internet that both your phone and your radio will connect to and "meet"

It's all magic from there :p

Yeah, I think he was saying you'd login to the website and "register" the scanner. Then when you logged in on the app with the same login, you'd see the scanner and be able to monitor and control it.

I've looked at the product announcement video again. Around the 16:45 point Upman was talking about the WIFI feature. He said one could control the scanner "from any where in the world as long as you have an internet connection"..

Same tech that allows me to send anything from anywhere to my printer at home. Or one of these Go - Pro cameras with remote access. Like the above post- an IP address is an IP address as long as both devices have access. Guess that works if one wants to leave the 536 at home. Don't see much need for it a mobile context however. Well then again- having breakfast in a truckstop.....

Defiantly getting one of these. Thanks UPMAN for furthering my addiction.

All I know is, I do not need one but will get one. The Wi-Fi is a solution in search of a problem :p

HRO's prices werent so great this year ,some gave you $5 or $1 off !

Quote to the Quote... I don't think Costco would ever sell high end scanner radios at their stores. It would take up too much wasted space for a high ticket item. Maybe their lower end models might sell, but its a niche market to sell these radios. It might look neat on the shelves but your average buyer that goes to Costco is not looking for a TrunkTracker 5 Bearcat scanner with Phase II TDMA digital mod to receive.

The average person is looking for bulk items of food for their families and household items as well as furniture for their homes. Also, tires for the car and gas, not 600 dollar Uniden Radios.
