If you are talking about OPP beat repeaters. They repeat radio traffic from fleetnet from a local talkgroup assigned to them. The OPP portables are analog, and can access the beat repeater, The OPP car radios are digital, and have a repeater in the car, that transmits analog to the portable. The portables have options to switch from Local to Beat, VR01, VR02, VR03. The transmission usually ranges 5 to 8 kms from the tower depending on terrain, and signal strength output.

The most common beat repeater is 413.5375.

BEAT repeaters are not through the regular Fleetnet towers nor are they simplex.

They are usually located in a high spot in the area that the officers do their foot patrols.

For example, the Collingwood BEAT repeater is located way up on the old Collingwood Grain Terminal.

It repeats the officers portable transmissions on UHF so other officers on foot patrol can hear them and it also relays them using a colocated mobile radio to the closest Fleetnet tower so the officers in cars can hear them.

It's the sam setup as the mobile repeater in a car except it operates on a different set of UHF frequencies and it's located in a high spot.

The BEAT repeater is fixed on the talkgroup local to the area it serves.

Collingwood's sits on 1OPS31. Wasaga Beach's is on 1OPS33.

Yes, the officer does use a UHF portable to access the BEAT repeater which then relays his communications to the Fleetnet talkgroup.

Doesn't Caledon OPP in Bolton use a beat repeater located at the station?

There's something in the Caledon area but I don't travel through the area enough to know exactly where it is.

Given that Bolton's downtown area is in a large hole, it would make sense.

The frequency is the strange part. Not sure why they couldn't have used one of the other two BEAT frequencies since there's no other BEAT repeaters in the area.

So OPP portables are just analog motorola ? Theyre quite large (not like the kenwood radios). How does that work for encrypted channels if they normally transmit analog unencrypted with the vehicle repeater?

They're Tait units not Motorola.

The units that use the encrypted talkgroups generally don't have a mobile repeater.

They spend most of their time in the vehicle so there's no need for one.
