Did I not read in one of these threads that it is possible to use a regular USB as long as the batteries are taken out and pushing certain buttons (can't recall which combinations) will accept data?

No a standard USB cable with the small end will not fit into the port on the scanner. Additionally it is keyed with a special plastic tab so that you can't put the Uniden USB adapter in the wrong way, so even if it did fit, it wouldn't have the little indent in the small USB end.

The problem I have is that I have windows 7 64bit. I have a cable from ebay that works just fine, I even have the 64bit driver for it.. Problem is its NOT SIGNED!!! soooo, I have to hit F8 at boot and load windows without driver enforcement EVERYTIME! or im going to have to buy a new cable.. Can anyone tell me if that monoprice cable has a signed 64bit driver? I have been to the cable manufactures web site and googled and many folks cannot get a signed driver from this company.

What driver does your current cable use? If it has "PL2303" in the name, then you can download newer signed drivers dirctly from Prolific (Welcome to Prolific).

It's not a prolific Its a cheap fleabay cable that has blue ends and a silver cable. the chip is a HL-340, can't remember off the top of my head the manufacture, something like ucn.cn??:(

Here it is for the HL-340 Vista 64 bit driver!!

From the manufacturer:

Download: CH341SER.ZIP
64-bit driver for Windows XP/VISTA
Because we do not yet have a digital signature from Microsoft, when booting up press F8 and select "forbid digital signature" mode.
Then in the "Control Panel" open "User" and turn off "UAC".
We will apply the digital signature at a later date.

(What they don't say is you will need to hit f8 every time you want to use your cable, as windows 7 64 will not allow the driver to run without it)

Awesome find!

Just received mine from Monoprice. Downloaded drivers from Uniden site and started uploading to my BCT15X using FreeSCAN.

Thank you JHVH-1!!!

unzip them to a folder on your desktop, plug in your cable, when it asked for the drivers choose "Brows for drivers on my computer" and point it to the folder you created on your desktop.. that should do it..

How does this work?

How does this USB to Serial cable from monoprice work?

From looking at the picture of the cable from the provided link, the serial portion is a male connector. Isn't the serial to usb cable that comes with the scanners have a male connector also? It's seems to me there needs to be a female connector somewhere in this picture...

That picture shows the correct connector (can't verify if that is a good product or not).

Look at the end of the cable supplied with the scanner...it would plug right into the connector shown in that picture (just as it would into a physical RS232 port on a PC that had one). The scanner does not come with a serial-to-usb cable...just serial.

HDMI Cable, Home Theater Accessories, HDMI Products, Cables, Adapters, Video/Audio Switch, Networking, USB, Firewire, Printer Toner, and more!
I have several of these adapters from Monoprice (three pc's). They work very well, including on my laptop with Vista 64bit Home Premium.
