SmartConnect is going to allow them to use LTE on their APX radios and also the cell phone app, which we know they're doing. The provided SIM cards are FirstNet SIMs.

CriticalConnect permits them to connect to another "foreign" system that subscribes to the service. It's quite an expensive service so not every regional comm system can afford it. There are a lot more politics involved here than the next option.

Limited resource patching via CCGW (@ CRIS) to CCGW (@ Allied Agency) is one of the cheaper alternatives, or even a CCGW with consolette on the respective radio system. The latter is the easiest with less coordination as opposed to backhaul presence for CCGWs on their respective radio networks.

And, yes, there's ISSI, which could be used for mutual aid purposes, but is more to increase coverage via means of roaming. There's a lot of configuration in the system to get it to work so each system maps radios and TGs properly. Plus both agencies need to figure out how their backhaul is going to connect to each other; it's not as simple as just connect the microwave to the other microwave.

And the option of not spending money to build infrastructure where infrastructure already exists and instead putting that money into expanding and maintaining the existing infrastructure to add capacity for state communications.

What municipality is going to turn down state funding to upgrade and maintain parts of its radio system? These are the kinds of things that are being done in other states AFTER they wasted money doing it the way California is doing it right now. My current home state (Ohio) is an excellent example of this.

I'm not saying you're right or wrong, but that's more a general opinion about how the State is running things and I don't think this is the right thread to debate it given we're 56 pages in.

I'm not in a place to speak for CRIS, but there's more than just money involved to make things work. So this is going to apply to CriticalConnect too.

Two more CHP divisions broadcasted that they're transitioning to CRIS today. First was Central about an hour ago. They told units to report for the radio upgrade. A few minutes ago, Green announced that they're moving to CRIS today by telling units to stand by for a roll call.

58 dispatcher on the Black channel just told a unit to switch back to low band because they're having issues with CRIS. For the past few weeks I've heard the officers on Black low band intermittently. Usually they're on CRIS and I can only hear the dispatcher.

I can't hear Gold low band very often from my location, but I sometimes hear the 700 MHz P25 conventional frequency. That one is also mostly dispatch only now. I very rarely hear an officer.

Sounds like the whole Sac Area of CHP is moving to the system pretty quickly

I'm surprised the Green is transitioning with no sites east of Pine Hill. I guess they'll just use LTE?
I heard the announcement from the 44 dispatcher (El Dorado County). That's the only Green repeater I can hear from my location. I just fired up the Placer County feed, and the 42 units and officers are all still audible on low band.

I monitor 3 sites here in Visalia Blue Ridge, Deadwood Madera and Joaquin Ridge. I noticed CHP Black (TG 753) very active here in Tulare County. Encrypted of course

Here is the roll call for CHP Green on CRIS yesterday. (No idea of the TG on CRIS, but likely won't matter because it will be encrypted)
Then they confirm ALL Sacramento communications out of the center are now on CRIS.
However it appears Low band is still patched on the Green currently, (Don't know for how long)

Unless there's another roll-call elsewhere, they only did the Placerville (44) office, which makes me think Grass Valley (42) and Auburn (45) are still on low-band?

I'd think so. Are they using FirstNet for LTE supplemental coverage? I found this map on their website and the I-80 east region, SR-49, and Highway 50 corridor appear to have adequate coverage.
Spend millions to build out a LMR system with the expectation of relying on LTE most of the time. Seems about right. Please take this in the light hearted manor it's intended.

A serious question though, does anyone know if they are using both mobile and portable radios on CRIS or are they still using the VRS for the portables? And if they are still using the VRS, I'm guessing it's connected to the mobile radio on CRIS, and if so, how's that working out with both being on 700MHz?

My understanding is both the mobile and portable radios are on CRIS.
