I'm only hearing bits and pieces of the traffic, I'm just wondering if there is a way to pick it up or if what I'm missing out on is encrypted. I'm scanning with a BCD396XT

I'm new to this. In fact, I haven't even purchased a scanner yet.
However, can someone specifically point to where or how in the database I can see that Kalamazoo City & Kalamazoo Township are using encryption?
That is kind of a downer (for me anyways) because I travel the I-94 corridor between Paw and Kalamazoo on a daily basis and also go up to Grand Rapids via US-131 a lot so I was looking to purchase a scanner to listen to during my travels. However, if a large portion of these travel areas are encryped I'm not sure it will be worth it.
Thanks.
In the MPSCS link above, when there's a E next to the talkgroup ID, it means encryption is used on it.
Thank you. That helped a lot.
If you don't mind, help me understand this. If you go to Database > Michigan > Kalamazoo
Kalamazoo County, Michigan (MI) Scanner Frequencies and Radio Frequency Reference
Under Kalamazoo County you will see a list of frequencies. How do these differ from MPSCS? Are they used at all? And how would you tell if they are encrypted?
As an example:
If you go Database > Michigan > Van Buren
Van Buren County, Michigan (MI) Scanner Frequencies and Radio Frequency Reference
Under Van Buren County you will see 155.58000 Sheriff (Encrypted), however in the MPSCS under Van Buren County there isn't a single talkgroup ID that has an "E" after the ID.
Just trying to get a better understanding of what all the non-MPSCS freqs mean in the Michigan database.
Thanks.
Kalamazoo and Van Buren Counties use both MPSCS and VHF. The VHF stuff is mostly for fire. Kalamazoo County converted their old VHF law enforcement frequencies to fire use after they switched all law enforcement to MPSCS.
To help out the OP and the question that was asked, to help all the rest of us, since your local to that area could you go through the Kalamazoo county page and let us know of the areas that need updating? Thanks!

Sorry for the delayed response; I saw your PM but just wasn't able to get on here and reply.Hi I was wondering if anybody else has been having problems monitoring Kalamazoo County Sheriff on MPSCS?
In checking the database, I noticed that the control channels for the Lakewood and Vicksburg sites have changed somewhat; those are 2 of the sites that I can pick up at home. I haven't been able to monitor much so far, but will definitely investigate further when I get the chance to get over to K-zoo.Hi I was wondering if anybody else has been having problems monitoring Kalamazoo County Sheriff on MPSCS?
