New Equipment spotted

I've come across some new apparatus put into service in recent months including station 6 Boat Tow, 21 Boat and trailer. Anyone else seen anything of interest recently?

Cheers,
JR

This is one shot of Boat Tow 6 that I have got.. The new "Medical Response Unit's" (2 Suv type vehicles) are supposed to be in service in June, I don't know which stations that will be located in...

I do believe one new bush buggy is on the way, I don't know what's happening with the 2 roll-off pod trucks that were at the shops, and I still don't see any of these new 14 Smeal Engines :/

The who to the what now? Interesting find. I wonder what the plans are for those (besides the obvious, hazmat).

One of the old E350 hi-top chiefs' vans has apparently been auctioned off to a Cochrane resident or someone who either works at or has a really serious love affair with the Cochrane McDonald's. I'm in Cochrane at least once a week and it is always parked in the parking lot. All the decaling is stripped off except the "S" denoting south chief on the hi-top, but, get this, all the red lights are still installed. Now, it could be that because the lights on that style are integral to the body, they didn't want to bother removing them, but I always thought it was not legal to display emergency lighting on a non-emergency vehicle. I am rapidly learning that it has to be illuminated in order to be in violation. This and the old Cochrane pumper that Men in Kilts has, plus the handful of ambulances in possession of places like The Loan Doctor, is making me learn that. Plus another particular vehicle that has been spotted recently and is gaining publicity today in various forums.

And #23 Highrise. I have more pictures if you'd like.... The 14 new Smeal Engines could be up to another 6 months before they're in the city.. The last Boat Tow unit (#39 Boat Tow) was just delivered to the shops and it will be a few more weeks before it is in service. There are 2 new Bush Buggy's on the way as well, but no time fram for them :/ I also believe a Tender and at least one new Hazmat truck on in the works.... but that's all I have for now

I have seen some old Calgary EMS ambulances out and around that are privately owned with most of the decals like "EMS" still on... kinda shocks me

Besides the ambulances that look like Dole fruit cups (the gas-powered green, yellow, and white GMCs), there are still some trucks out there serving AHSEMS from the old fleets of Calgary and some smaller towns. Look for an AHS sticker on the door. I've seen plenty of trucks with town or service (i.e. Guardian) related names stripped off and an AHS sticker slapped on the door. As the new fruit cups roll off the assembly line, though, those numbers are dwindling.

Made my way down to the shops today and got a couple shots of the new and old equipment outside. Any idea what the new pod trucks are for other than the obvious Hazmat markings on them? Pictures should be up on my site in the next day or two.

Cheers!

Just talked with one of my Redwood chiefs who heard that those things are possibly decontamination-related - as in, drop it at a site where you need long-term decon, feed it from a pumper or something like that.

I don't know what the c-cans will have specifically, but I do know that they are meant to be deployed at large scale/ long term incidents and that CFD has purchased multiple c-cans

Vehicle Equipment Regulation

Prohibition
24(1) A person shall not drive or operate a vehicle that has a flashing lamp unless the flashing lamp is allowed or required under this Regulation or another regulation under the Act.

(3) A flashing lamp must be removed from a vehicle that is no longer used in performing the duties for which a flashing lamp is allowed or required under this Regulation or another regulation under the Act.

Thanks, that's what I thought. So all these ones I mentioned above are in violation. Some of them, like the old DC van, would be quite hard to remove without harming the body of the vehicle (i.e. disrupting the aero profile), so I can understand why something like that would be met with reluctance/friction. But the ambulances, the Men in Kilts pumper, etc., could change their red and white lenses for amber ones and meet the legal requirements.

The "ambulance" in Calgary has been taken care of. Lights are disconnected, signs removed, and the red lenses for the emergency lights are being covered over. Problem should be solved and he promised not to take it to any hospital while on his ambulance photo missions.

Changing the color of flashing lights on the other vehicles will not work as only certain vehicles can have flashing lights (and what color they can be). None of the examples you talk about would be allowed to have any flashing lights.

I'm grasping at straws here but could it be a Marine Rescue unit? Just a small type of river rescue carried in every Engine?

Here in Edmonton every pump carries an RDC (River Deployment craft) which is a yellow blow up zodiac. The only time RDC is used on the air is if there is a river rescue call.
