We have a lot of polish in our area....and for fun our dispatchers will say "common spelling" after trying to say the last name......which can be either rather long or real short..its rather funny...

My home 20 eating pizza.
Our area is an "Alpha, Bravo, etc..." area as well. I got in the habit of using that (along with the 24:00 clock) and used them and our 10-codes at work in the daily job because it makes it easier for me. I didn't need to teach the co-workers the 10 codes because they were for my notes only but it was always a treat to have them need the refreshers on the time differences and the Phonetics. So many times I'd shake my head still hearing "K as in CAT" or even once heard "Apartment C as in C*cksucker".... Who am I to judge if they remembered what they needed...

Ive heard the same one say Bravo and Boy. Maybe he got the two different types of code mixed up. I thought maybe he forgot Bravo and just made up something with a B as I didnt know there where two different types of code. Learn something new everyday.

... snip...

Interestingly though, here in Colorado, some of our PDs and SOs, use BAKER instead of BOY only when they are referring to a two-man unit's call sign. ...snip ...
I have a feeling (at least in the large metro areas) that BAKER is used because BOY is not politically correct...

I dunno, some folks posting here seem to be from large cities (like me) and it's Boy, not Baker in NYC!

Our local pd switched from boy to bravo for exactly that reason.

Here in Oregon- Marion County, which Salem is in- uses the NATO code: Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Fox.. and pretty much everyone else uses the Police version: Adam, Baker/Boy, Charles/Charlie, David, Edward.

Sometimes someone will change it up and use the NATO codes instead of the police version and vice versa.. the dispatchers don't like that..

In a previous life, being both active duty military and reserve police led to some confusion when one forgot which mic one was speaking in.

The actual meaning of the Adam designation will vary by agency/department/office across the country. IIRC, in the LAPD, an Adam unit is a 2-officer unit, and 1Adam12 would mean 1st shift, 2-officers, beat 12 (or district 1, beat 2).

LOL
IIRC, I once read that a law enforcement agency switched from "Mary" to "Mike" due to someone not wanting his male officers ID'ing as "Mary" units.
