This is a critical week for the two anti-encryption bills proposed by New York State politicians, that would require press real time access, and public access to all dispatch police communications (with a delay if required)

Note that the bill was amended to remove the provision about access to the general public (with a delay of up to 10 minutes). The current version would only guarantee access to news media and emergency services organizations.

All of the co-sponsors of this bill are NYC Democrats (plus one NYC member of the Working Families Party), so the bill has a fair chance of getting out of committee, but time is running out.

We will continue our fight to get access to all NYPD Dispatch comms for the general public, with a delay, same as is done in Chicago and Baltimore. One fight at a time .... first the Press, then The Public. We will not back down.

I don't see how radio encryption would stop anyone from taking and publishing photos.
The New York press and media groups use NYPD dispatch communications via scanners in order to immediately respond to newsworthy incidents so they can take videos and photos which they sell to newspapers and TV stations as well as social media groups.

Encryption will put them out of business. They will no longer be able to do their jobs....

We will CONTINUE to use whatever legal means possible to STOP NYPD Encryption on Dispatch channels, unless they provide a clear link to the press with NO delay, and a clear link to the public with a delay. That is a 100% reasonable demand. We have the power and financial strength of the National Press in NYC, The Media, The Citizens Ap, as well as various neighborhood groups, and political reps from NY State and NYC. No one should be put out of business due to this situation. We are not going away. When NYPD is 100% Encrypted, The Legal response will start. LAUGH NOW.....just makes us stronger.

They could go back to old-fashioned journalism. Get out in the streets and find the news. Publicize tip lines for the public.

Under the US amendments everyone can choose to be a member of the media, it would be more like the they get to choose who THEY consider to be media.

To clarify "the press" as it pertains to the First Amendment: When the Constitution was written, there were no major "news media" conglomerates. The "press" referred to therein was the machine used to create flyers, posters and other published materials. "Freedom of the press" encompassed the right of any natural person to print what they wished, even if not favorable to the government. Limiting that right to "bona fide news organizations" is a long-standing corruption of the intent of the Amendment.

However, because that is the way it has been understood and promoted for so long, the idea that individual citizens have those same rights is a hard sell. Also, the party in power in NY, NYC and the USA is working to change the country into something it has never been. Arguments based on history and tradition might not get you very far.

The NYPD situation refers to "credentialed press"

Didn't you just say in the video "i know most you don't listen to police radios" at a press club gathering?

Once span of control leaves the encrypted departments possession all bets are off.
That is a fact.
