Playing with my "downgraded" PSR-500, i've discovered that saving to the V-Scanner feature, either through the scanner, or though software don't seem to work that well. I've had my scanner reset back to the factory defaults several times.

However, when I upgraded back to v1.8, the V-Scanner worked fine with no problems.

YMMV....

I studied the PDF for the M30626FHPGP#U5C Chip (which is supposedly the CPU in the GRE-500) and it says that there are different Blocks of EEPROM in the Chip.

There is one portion that is ONLY good for 100 Flashes (likely the Bootloader) and that other parts are only good for 100-10,000 Flashes depending on the exact version that you have.

I would not count on the Manufacturer spending the extra bucks for the '10,000 Flashable version' since they may not plan on releasing that many Updates. :)

Writing to the SAME location is considered a full burn (or usage) and writing to an unused location does not count against you (but uses up that location). You can flash one byte to a 1K block one time in that same location or 1024 times if you use each location once (unless you wrote your own BIOS you can't control the location, the BIOS needs to do optimal "wear leveling" to make the most use of the EEPROM).

So I would suggest that you choose your version and don't switch back and forth.

PS: It would be great if someone could compare the old version with all the other versions and produce a Patch to re-introduce it into the newest versions.

I was wondering if any one still has the 1.0 GRE file they could send to me? I also have a question if you can still monitor a EDACS system with ESK with 1.0 file or due you need a later file?
Thanks HDMechanic

PSR 600 very impressed ...then slightly disappointed

Greetings,

Received a PSR 600 and am very pleased with the trunk area of the radio but with the air freq's the radio does not perform very well.I have tried various antenna's but even an old pro-2022 that is in need of a complete tune-up outperforms it in this area.
Anyone have similar complaint or is it just this unit? I do not wan't to crack it open and diagnose it it while in it's infancy.

Could anyone tell me where to find or send me a copy of cpu version 1.
I have had success with a two radio two computer set-up for EDACS ® and ProVoice™ but I would like to experiment with the original firmware.

I have one more question. When I hooked my scanner to my computer with DSD i was not getting any info on the screen and had no voice coming out when I finally had info on the screen, I was wondering if an audio amplifier could be added to make the program to work better??

SW revision for older scanners

Yes that would be great.
And also a SW revision for older scanners such as the BC245XLT, I have one of those that would be very suitable for tracking PV talk groups. I am sure the revision would be very little work.

Yeah I have been away from the game for a while. I thought that EDACS Pro Voice could not be picked up by anything.. Let me know how?

Is there some way the firmware could be custom edited to extend the receiving range of a scanner to, say, shortwave or something similar or are the limitations in the hardware?

Sorry, I just realized this question is sort of off topic.

compile a list of scanners that will track PV talkgroups

It would be nice if we could compile a list of scanners that will track PV talkgroups, and the SW version required with the help of our fellow members.

DUMMIES book to DSD listening

Are there any very specific UN TECHNICAL instructions like a dummies book for DSD?? I have enough electronics knowledge to break things but do not have any of the ability to do what people do to listen to a pro voice system. I appreciate the knowledge many have but in trying to figure that out is where I am lost in translation.Or even better are there those willing to work to show others how to do this. My scanning goes back to Crystals and programmables and the old days, this new stuff is too much and I am sure others would like to know. , Steps are what I need not a written document with no explanation, Thanks

Your best bet is to get a PSR-800 scanner or the new Whistler version (WS1080) which is also branded by Radio Shack as the Pro-668, I used these steps with the PSR-800 and it scans and decode my local Provoice systems very well. I tried a bunch of other methods (discriminator taps, RTL dongles, etc.) but this was by far the most effective solution.

Follow these steps (from another RR thread):

EDACS Esk Tracking With Provoice

Here is a how to (For PSR-800 Only)

In -Settings-
PC/IF CCDump (put a Check mark so this opion is active)
EDACS Dig (put a Check mark so this opion is active)
IF Out: (Set this to HP) HP is the headphone jack

!! Make sure you have your radio programmed to your local edacs system and the talk group is
in provoice format

after the above you will need dsd or dsd+. For the non pros you need dsd+ remember the lame file
for dsd+ install them into a windows 7 or 8.x pc now hook up a Stereo to Stereo audio cable from your scanner to computer sound card mic first then if that dont work try line in

now scan the provoice talkgroup when there is a lock on to a provoice channel
you will need to volume up or down button on scanner note it says (IF Out Vol: xx) xx is any value
adjust the volume some where from 16-22 for best decode

DSD

Thanks for the info, it seems much easier to do it this way if someone just explains it!!!
Our city may dump ProVoice in near future as they are possibly going to MARCS, Ohio State radio system

Btw,

It would have been better if you started a new thread rather than replying to a 5 year old one.
