It wouldn't surprise me if the exact same thing happened here in WF.
I was living the the DFW area when they built the EDACS system here in 2005 or so and wasn't paying attention to what happened then.

When Harris announced EOL for EDACS I started looking at the city budgets and council agendas and minutes for any hint of a new P25 system. All I found was references to a radio replacement project in the annual budget but I could never find any bids or RFPs or anything. I think they did a no-bid contract or something. Then one day in 2016 a P25 control channel shows up. They didn't even file an FCC application until several days after it was already on the air.

Fort Hood too...

I remember a few years ago I was attending a game at the AT&T center in someone's box suite, and close by was the Dailey Well's box... it was freaking suite... I mean SWEET... it had their logo on the wall and everything.

Why a radio system vendor needs a Box Suite beats me... but I suppose you gotta let all those EDACS and Project 25 techs and administrators get to watch spurs games.

In all actuality, I spent a greater part of my career in "enterprise software" and sales, so I get it, I've spent a lot of time in box suites, nice restaurants, golf courses, etc, but it certainly raised an eyebrow knowing that the customers were 99% public sector.

You have to have something to go along with your 14,000 square foot house with 8 bathrooms.

Perhaps they feel that it's easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.

Interesting story of Daily Wells...I'll never recommend them to anyone. I have a friend who held nothing but high regards for Mr. Wells but since he stepped down things have really changed. I spent my last 6 months in the Austin area on a project to R&R a bunch of GE/Harris product from an entire county's emergency services. The whole reason the county was funding a mas exodus to Mother /\/\, a couple of TAMU Forestry provided brush trucks needed the radios reprogrammed and the county was told by Daily Wells they could take the trucks to Bell County's radio shop 30 miles away to see if they would program them or they could drive the trucks to San Antonio (fun in summer in a truck with no air conditioning at 55 mph) which is just about a 4 hour trip each way.

Last year at IWCE some guys who I had talked with at Tait approached me about using their radios for a P25 project I've been planning. Some of the guys from Harris were told that story and their mouths were on the floor. I then turned to my friends and said, as long as I have to go through Daily Wells...Harris and Tait aren't options.

This is what happens when you have POLITICIANS making decision for critical emergency infrastructure. To these guys, there's no difference between the VHF simplex radios they had 30-40 years ago, and today's super-critical, super-technical radio systems, and ignoring the limitations thereof.

You should see the suite they have at AT&T Stadium in Dallas, it’s even nicer than the one in San Antonio.

Also on our regional class B 5kw 550 AM KTSA radio station here in San Antonio I first heard this story covered
on Wed Jan 22 during the 8:30 am news slot and again Friday Jan 24 at 6:47 am by morning show host Trey Ware.

Wow this thread has already past 4,000 views in such a short time. I clicked on that KSAT link and the web article says
The Wells’ stature as political donors is even more prominent at the county level than the city level a few article examples:
Sheriff Javier Salazar: $45,000
Precinct 4 Commissioner Tommy Calvert: $20,000.30
Precinct 3 Commissioner Kevin Wolff: $20,000
Candidate for Precinct 3 Commissioner Trish DeBerry: $10,000
Precinct 1 Commissioner Sergio “Chico” Rodriguez: $10,000
District Attorney Joe Gonzales: $5,000
Judge Nelson Wolff: $1,000

So if all the above all follow Mayor Ron Nirenberg lead, some local charities just might have a banner year 2020 ;)

At one time I understood that AT&T Center corporate box suites were north of 250K /yr or 3K ~ 9K each event varies widely !

It will be interesting when and who eventually installs the new BC/SA/CPS Public Safety P25 Phase II new radio system ?
