1520: This is at the U of U Orthopaedic center

Sounds like gas is getting in to the buildings. Not good.

All it needs is one good source of ignition.

So, how do gas leaks like this work. Do explosions actually ever happen and what does it take to set them off? I've heard so many gas leaks paged in the past and I don't think I've ever heard of something blowing. Can the fumes be backing up into homes/bldgs/etc.? Is natural gas as flammable as propane or something like that?

I have seen video of entire neighborhoods being wiped off the face of the map. It just takes one tiny spark if there is that much gas.

Depends, most leaks hit the air and disperse and are not a problem except for right at the hole. It sounds like this one the construction crew was boring and hit the line so it had seeped in to the sewer system. Now the gas is concentrated, has oxygen, and can find it’s way in to buildings that have a source of ignition.

Yes this is natural gas.

PS: Yes it gets in to the homes and building through vents. The sewer line connects and runs throughout but there are vents on the roofs to let the sewer gases vent. So basically you're whole drain, waste, and vent system in your home could be full of NG.

It also looks like the evacuation is causing problems of its own: FD just send 3 units on a trapped person at one of the huge apartment complexes......."persons trapped in elevator" at the Incline Terrace apt bldg.

U of U PD VHF is also reporting they are sending UUPD units to 1300 E 400 S for traffic problems

Sounds like there are some levels coming down. Judging from the KSL pictures they have gotten the ground opened up near the leak and they have been pulling manhole covers on the sewer to get more air in there.

Also sounds like the HAZMAT guys have a good perimeter now on the gas in the sewer lines.

All those old buildings down there. New buildings are required to have emergency power for their elevators to keep that from happening.

You know someone needs to buy these guys some beers after this. They have reacted promptly and effectively. Good control of the situation and deployed the resources as needed to the areas as they arrived. I'm impressed.

Does anyone know if Trax is still running?

That had shut it down up there around the leak, not sure how that affected service every where else.

1601Hrs:
I don’t know who that contractor was doing the work but stick a fork in them because they are done!

Pretty good pictures on KSL.com

1612Hrs:

From KUTV Questar officials say a 6-inch plastic gas line was broken sending gas from the ground where the crew was digging. It also seeped below ground into drain and sewer lines.
