I'm strongly considering buying another digital scanner. I already have a pro-96. I'm leaning towards buying the GRE PSR-500 but I would like to hear from people that have used both the GRE and Radio Shack digital scanners on which perform better. Thanks.

The PRO-96 was designed by GRE for Radio Shack and has similar receiver design in a slightly smaller package. As you may have read the PSR-500 is more sensitive and has many more new features including an object oriented user interface for the memory functions, LTR, EDACS narrow, and Spectrum Sweeper. It retains the V-scanner function that the PRO-96 has, but is accessible much more quickly than before. The display now includes a real time signal meter and has a programmable LED and sound alert for each object.

Some detailed information can be found on each model here:

Both are excellent radios.
I used to have a PRO-96 and a 2096.
I bought a PSR-500 when it came out and I like it even better.
If you listen to a lot of digital systems, the PSR-500 is excellent.
It makes digital sound enjoyable to listen to.
No choppy audio, no motorboating, just good audio.

Best of luck.....

I purchased the PRO-96 when it was on sale for $349.00, plus about 10% tax, and it did a good job. However, when I began researching both and comparing the features, plus the rebanding issue, I returned the PRO-96 and ordered the GRE PSR-500, and I'm glad that I did. So, far it has done a very good job and I am quite pleased with it. Now, that both are the same price, I would think the GRE PSR-500 would be the better choice. And, that's my two cents worth.

Pro-96 v psr-500

Hello,
I'd thought I reply to this thread since I saw the psr-500 in person at a local store here in Denver today. Okay, after reading many reviews regarding the squelch/vol knob and the antenna thing, I have to hold off for now on considering to buy a pro-96 or the 500, it would be a toss-up. The psr-500 is smaller than the pro-96 but in some ways is better but I need a battery save circuit and that is very important for any radio. Not to get off the subject I own a Uniden 396t and my opinion is that radios with 3-aa cells dont last long, sensitivity is not good on some parts on the 800 band depending on where you live. I want to upgrade. As far as audio quality I hope the 96 or 500 will be equal or better to each other. I guess different people want special features but the best way is to know a friend and play with his radio before purchasing one. Both radios cost about the same but the user must be satisfied with the performance. Thats my two cents worth...

The 500 has a battery save circuit as well.

The 500 seems to have better sensitivity at 800 mhz. I wouldn't worry about the squelch knob too much. The knobs are different enough in size that they don't really interfere with eachother too much.

TDHG4U61,

I'd be interested in looking at that comparison.

Can you supply a link or web site address for it ?

Thanks, Tim

vs the Pro 97 the 500 is 10 times better. When I had the 97 all the time I would adjust it and in the few days I have owned the 500 I have yet to have a problem with it and that was my big complaint of the 500.
