To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Hey Everyone, got a bit of a Tech Special today. So I received a Harris P5500 in the mail that seems to have a slight issue. The radio feature menu is showing "SYSGRP#0," where normally it would say SYSGRP#65535. Ive already gone through some troubleshooting steps like upgrading the feature string, updating BurnApp, BootApp, and ECP, completely deleting the ECP off the radio through HyperTerminal and reloading the FW, and trying to write a blank personality codeplug to the radio.

None of these steps has worked and is still showing SYSGRP#0. Has anyone ever ran into this problem and maybe has a fix to it? I am assuming this may have been an old OpenSky radio that someone did not convert properly along the way.

Any help or information would be absolutely greatly appreciated!

I have some P7200s that are in the same boat. And these were indeed OpenSky radios that I managed to get running on ECP instead of OTP. At this point... it's a feature string issue.

So that's what I am hearing. Is there anything specific inside the feature string that can be modified to reflect the SYSGRP and/or did you get yours working?

You would need a new feature string generated for each individual radio with the proper bits selected to add features and things like SYSGROUPS etc. Feature strings are encrypted and are not hackable like a Motorola flashcode.

They are encrypted yes, but some people have managed to do it. But that's neither here nor there. I just am not sure what to do since no Harris Dealer will touch these radios anymore since they are way pat EOL

I've given up on mine. I'm just going to (at some point, because I'm lazy) is package them up as P25C radios with a gang charger and sell them as a package. Maybe a prepper, hunter etc might find them useful.

Which feature is missing though? A look at the feature list doesn't mention one that adds more SYSGRP. I have an ex-OpenSky 75p that's doing the same thing. My current theory is the lack of ProScan.

Assuming you have other features in your radio, then it's just a matter of how it was provisioned at the factory. You can purchase a sys/group/channel capacity upgrade via your Harris dealer. While I can give general prices for feature options, I don't have pricing for capacity upgrades, but it's generally quite reasonable.

I purchased a capacity upgrade for a 7200 maybe 10 years ago, give or take... and it was in the $200 range.

I think it's gotten cheaper since most radios now ship from the factory with max capacity. Systems have been getting bigger with more users and groups because "mission creep" is a thing. So rather than nickel and dime the customers with group capacity upgrades, they go for the throat and add 1500 to 2500 dollars per radio just to enable P25 all modes instead.
