The only clear transmission from the first one sounded like Asiana 709. The second one was Malaysian 6462 to my ears.

BTW, and maybe OT, I logged Continental 91 via HFDL on an 8 MHz frequency as it was flying over Turkey - from Albany, NY!

Friday 4-15 Monitoring Logs

04-18 Monitoring Logs:

An interesting evening monitoring Santa Maria, Shanwick and New York on 5598 and 6628.

First, there were numerous SIGMET warnings (SIGMET Alpha 4) The warning consisted of " Icelandic Volcanic Ash now quasi stationary at or below 28,000 from 50 North 40 West to ........." The warnings were issued by New York, Santa Maria and Shanwick approximately every 30 minutes. Shannon is apparently pretty much locked down as I failed to copy any XMitt from Shannon the entire evening.

Also, at least four different flights reported their CPDLC not functioning or "in and out" with Santa Maria. I had to wonder if the Volcanic Ash had somehow impacted the data transfer.

During the course of monitoring for just over 90 minutes I copied 13 REACH flights en route to Europe, could only verify one destination of Lisbon. I don't believe I have ever copied that many REACH flights in 90 minutes on 5598 / 6628, at least in recent memory.

Lastly, copied "Widow-Maker 05 hailing "Valid Obsession" on 5598 with Shanwick responding "Sir your on the wrong frequency".

Volcanic impact on data transfer

You might be right about impacts on data. I've been monitoring HF ACARS on 6661, and here is a msg from Continental flight # 62 (Newark to Madrid). Propagation is decent tonight too, as I'm tracking flights all over the north and equatorial regions of the Atlantic from my home in upstate New York.

Volcanic ash is reflective of radio waves. A thick enough layer acts just like a mirror.

Shannon's signals could be bouncing away from you.

When Mount St Helens erupted, the ash cloud traveled eastward across the USA. As it did so, it reflected radio signals in all bands eastward. For example, Chicago TV and scanner frequencies were received loud and clear in western New York for a day or so, then vanished completely as the ash front passed Chicago itself.

On 11175 at approx. 1830 UTC I heard the callsign "Absorbing". couldn't find it on any lists. Any guesses on the forum who that could be. I did find out later there was a presidential visit in NYC-not to far from me. "Absorbing" was calling Andrews.

Reception has been fantastic the past few days. Last night the 11 and 13 MHz bands were open well past local midnight. I also monitored a new aero station (for me) on 11366 kHz from Indonesia. More details at end of post.

Some interesting aero traffic on 11366 kHz. The ground station identifies as Jakarta and listings suggest this to be an Indonesia RDARA frequency. I am not sure what airline they were talking with, since the aircraft was too weak to copy. At the end of the transmission the callsign Palembang is also heard, but sounds like the same guy. Also on an interesting note, the Chinese firedrake jammer was loud and clear on 13300. This frequency is used by MWARA CWP-2 San Francisco and Tokyo. Not the first time this jammer has been heard on a valid aero frequency. A few months ago it was logged on 11300 kHz, which is AFI-3. The jammer was also heard simulcast on 8400, 10300 and 10440 kHz this morning.
