Features like "Close Call" (Uniden's name), "Signal Stalker" (RadioShack's name), and "Spectrum Sweeper" (GRE's name) require certain hardware - though the type of hardware will vary based on manufacturer (i.e. GRE vs. Uniden) because they handle the function differently.

If the scanner doesn't have the hardware, a software update cannot add the feature.

I believe that many years ago the FCC came out with a rule that no schematics of scanners were to be made public so that no one could re-program a scanner to receive the cell phone band. This was to compliment that future scanners (in the US) would be incapable of receiving cell bands.

I made a few adjustments to my scanners back when so I could receive the prohibited bands here in Canada but now I cannot.

Some scanners & general communications receivers sold outside the US can be unblocked still. I have an Icom 1500 that is unblocked that I purchased in Canada.

So thanks to the FCC protecting the cell phone industry, no schematics.

I think that practice is obsolete - along with AMPS. The FCC should drop it.

Never happen - trade secrets, can't let the competitors see your designs - (although I'd suspect they all know already). Funny how up until the FCC ban, the competitors managed. You might even argue that open design fostered advancements in design, as they analyzed each other's circuits.. There was a day when hobbyists even contributed to advancements in commercial designs.....:(

There was a day, a bit further back, when the hobbyists were the designers of the commercial equipment.

:) Are we all getting THAT old? :)

FCC will never drop obsolete rulings, its against some obsolete rule to do so.

I wanted to ask a question about the updates. When you update the firmware on the HP-1 is the database updated too or is it updated from the Sentinel database after you update Sentinel and then send it to the HP-1?

By the way this thing is Frickin' awesome mine just came this aftenoon and after I added the Extreme upgrade started playing with it. I really like the way you can lockon to the individual services. My radio receives great better than my old 396T which was a good radio but this little monster is wicked. I'm glad I waited to sell off some old equipment and get the whole pkg Radio-GPS-Extreme, I have a feeling they wouldn't get much use with this around

you need to update the HP database and send it to the scanner as well... separate from the firmware.

Thx Kris, I wasn't sure about the way it worked. I do like the update setup though it's fast and painless. Today I'm going to make print copies of the two manuals (unit & extreme) so I can read them when I want.

Anyone know If anybody is planning on a printed HP-1 easy to read manual or guidebook?

There was a link somewhere here that had a few "hpe" files. Does anyone have that link again, I can't locate it for some reason.

Targetting the release to support Nationwide RRDB channels (and some additional tweaks) by next year.

Probably wayyyy too late for any user input but it'd sure be nice to get the timeout of the display sidebar on the right side lengthened out..by the time my "processor" functions, it's disappeared :D..About the only other thing I'd lobby for is optional display of TRS Site ID's on the last line. Looking forward to the updates!

I'll try to post the updated manuals before then. We are starting final testing, so features are locked.
