Discovery mode... Is it possible to have the conventional discovery mode to scan through a favorites list, and plot activity on the different channels, maybe do recordings, etc.? I can see thsi being of use for mapping systems which may have MANY channels from the fcc, but may only use a few of them...

Conventional Discovery is done by setting a low and high frequency and searching the range between them. You could set up the HP1 to scan just the one Favorite and set record on. It will display System, Channel, UID, Time, Date and Service type for each transmission when played back..Note that additional data is being added per the summary of new features in UPMan's note about the next release. (Still not getting SIte :( )

Yes... But i have this habit of setting things up in the shack or on mydesk, and wandering off....

Just. Basic example, i could set it up to scan rough murs or uhf star channels, and determine if a channel isnt being used so i can park there, or find which channels are on, so i can analyze them later... Without listening to all of the files (im lazy)... It just seems like a bit of a natiral feature that could be included, based on the other functionality included already....

I don't understand... choose a Favorite, set it to scan and record and walk away.. What's so tough?;)

Here's what happens when I use a piece of music cataloging software called MediaMonkey.

First I copy (move) the contents of the user recordings folder on my HP1 (I think it's \HomePatrol\Rec\User\) to a hard disk on my computer - much faster to manipulate them on the computer than via a USB connection.

Then start up MM and browse to the folder on my computer:

mm.png

"Artist" is the HP1's "System" (first line).
"Genre" is the "Department" (second line).
"Title" is the "Channel" (third line).
"Comment" is the frequency or talkgroup ID (sub-line on third line).

From there I can see if any unusual channels were recorded and play them back (MM has an internal "music player" to do playback). I can sort by any of the columns and/or delete the actual files directly from this screen.

Apparently BWAVE lister is popular for this.. You actually can do it in Windows Explorer if you can figure out which columns to select. I guess in the end, it's just a workaround to what we need - an activity log for conventional channel scanning, it wouldn't be as detailed as the trunking one..

Hmm. Now I'm wondering whether iTunes could do this job....

Don't know if I would use Itunes Dave as it will probably try to wrap the files in
AAC DRM. Steve Jobs would love ya from the great beyond but you would end up
frustrated in the long term :D

Slight caveat - you'll notice I don't have date/time listed as one of the columns in the above screenshot. The filenames of the audio files are designed so that they work chronologically (organized by date & time). MM sorts by whatever column you choose (in the screenshot I sorted by title aka channel) and then does a second sort by filename, so they are in chronological order after a fashion... at least, within the boundaries of the first sort (in this case title/channel). If you wanted to play back strictly by true chronological order (regardless of any other metadata), you'd want to add another column in MM (easily doable by right-clicking on the column headers) of "Filename", and using that as your sort.

As I think about it, as another poster above said, yes, you could do this with Windows Explorer I think, because you can tweak Explorer's display columns to show these same fields. At least, in Win7 and (I think) WinXP.

I have to agree with the other poster that iTunes would probably try to mess with the files. You could certainly try to import them, though, and see how it goes. IIRC, the missing fields not shown above (i.e. "Album Title") all come up "HomePatrol", so they would at least be in one section of your iTunes library.

I've tried iTunes. It won't add DRM or "mess with your files".

Go to Edit | Preferences | Advanced...

Uncheck 'Copy...'. Now when you import, it won't create new copies of the files. It'll play the files in their original location.

Then go to 'File ' and select 'Add Folder' or 'Add File' to library.

It will play the files. The issue is that it doesn't understand the tagging.

I may be missing something, so others are welcome to follow the steps above to get the files into iTunes and see if I'm doing something wrong.

I've also tried WMP under Win7 and Vista and no luck in getting those programs to display all of the tags. I think W7 recognizes some, but not all and Vista didn't understand anything. I may play with it a bit more and then try Media Monkey if nothing else works...

windoze can do it. It'd be nice if i could make LabVIEW read the tags... then i could generate my plots and charts....

OK... had a conventional search & record session today. Found a bunch of channels and users. now... can we look forward to seeing the subaudible that is displayed on the screen encoded in another metatag? this data appears to be lost if you're not watching the screen.
