All Uniden scanners sold by retailers these days must follow MAP.

I remember back when Paul (UPMan) was still alive and very active on here, someone posted that a seller on eBay had a certain scanner listed at the correct MAP but there was a coupon on eBay for a few days that would cut $75 off the price…and Uniden made that seller raise their BIN price so that the coupon didn’t make the final price below MAP unless he wanted to lose his dealer status. The seller actually told this.

In my option that was going too far but I bring it up to say they’re very picky about it.

I remember that instance on Ebay. It seems that there has been a bit of confusion at times about Uniden's pricing policies, and their relationship with dealers vs distributors. I'm not sure, but I think this quote was about the same time as the discounted pricing on Ebay.

Uniden exercises no control over what dealers sell the scanners for. We set a price to our distributors, and express what we think the street retail price will be, but they are free to sell for any price they want. With limited exceptions, we actually don't even sell to retailers/dealers...we sell to distributors who then resell to dealers.

Right. But they do have MAP meaning a dealer/retailer can't advertise the price as being lower. Sometimes the "call us" on the webpage is an indicator that they will sell it for less if you just ask for their best price.

Likely the same will be true for these models as it has been for many others.

I came upon some interesting information today on the CB Distributing website (cbdistributing.com) regarding the new BCD160DN handheld and BCD260DN base/mobile scanners. Their website specifically lists the MAP (Minimum Advertised Price) for the BCD160DN at $249.99 and the MAP for the BCD260DN at $349.99. That explains why all 5 of the online sellers of the two new models that I have come across so far (Bearcat Warehouse, Scanner Master, Uniden.com, CB World and Zip Scanners) are all selling both models for the same exact prices.

What is MAP pricing? "Minimum Advertised Price or MAP is the lowest price at which a retailer can advertise a particular product. Set by the manufacturer, MAP pricing helps protect the brand's value and profits by ensuring that the products cannot be priced below a pre-decided amount."

If Uniden decides to sell the 160DN/260DN in the EU they will have a problem with this kind of “price agreements“. Due to European Union regulations a manufacturer can advise a sales price but he can‘t force a retailer to do so. If a retailer decide to sell it below the adviced sales price, the manufacturer can’t do a thing against it. If the manufacturer still tries to enforce a minimum sales price they can expect a verry huge fine.

If Uniden decides to sell the 160DN/260DN in the EU
They let Avera sell all their scanners in EU, and that are at higher than US prices even if the VAT and customs fee are deducted. Avera already have some of the US models for sale. Often with these kinds of dealership the distributor gets the products at a low price and have to do all support and warranty on his own. So a stock of replacement products are used to handle warranty and some of them are robbed for parts. That's why firmware upgrades for EU scanners are more scares as Avera themselves has to finance the coding time it takes, although it shouldn't be more than a couple of hours of work.

You're getting advertised (i.e. list) price and sales price mixed up. Uniden has a rule on the MAP, not final sale price. Sounds like it would perfectly comply in the EU.

well, I did read the story above regarding a retailer on ebay who gave a $75,= coupon to sell a Uniden scanner below the MAP and Uniden put some press on the retailer to raise the price.

This kind of price protection of a product is not allowed in the EU.

From how that played out I don’t think they would do that again but it did happen. But MAP and sell price are different things.

Well by following the MAP agreement you signed with the Manufacture it protects you and the rest of the dealers. I know some dealers that stated if they dropped below MAP they would be removed from the buyers list from the distributer. This also makes it where you pay the same price for 20 scanners as the retailer that buys 250 so you the small mom and pop shop have the same price as the giant online store.

Can we please get back to the topic of the new upcoming scanners 160/260DN. Gotten way off topic. Thanks

Not really far off. Price is a valid discussion point for the scanners and people understanding the pricing guidelines is important. Otherwise there’s not much else to discuss at this point.

This is the Tavern, too.

I just received an email this afternoon (02-02-2024) from Luke at Zip Scanners regarding the new BCD160DN and BCD260DN scanners. A direct copy-and-paste from that email is below:

Now Taking Pre-Sales Orders!
Happy to introduce 2 new police scanners from Uniden:

EXPECTED TO SHIP IN MARCH!

Details are still coming in but view the product page for everything we know as of now including size, capabilities, pricing & more.

We'll add all information to the product page the moment we receive from Uniden.

We expect these to sell out so we recommend buying now. Uniden has floor pricing on both models of $249.99 & $349.99 and we're selling for the minimum so you will not find these for less.

yeah and again they will sell out yet they want to charge your card for products they don't have in stock, i would be skeptical if they charged and couldn't deliver yours in a timely manner.

I wish UNIDEN / BEARCAT was coming out with a GMRS radio / conventional Scanner like the BTECH GMRS PRO. If UNIDEN / BEARCAT does come out with one, I sure hope it's capable of digital formats, such as DMR and IDAS/NXDN, because two radios in one. A GMRS radio to communicate with friends or family and a radio to monitor the AAR channels for Railroads.

Did this really need repeating in the same thread?
Even though, we're discussing UNIDEN's newest scanners, I just wish these radios were transceivers for GMRS as well. I'm sure both radios will be popular with Railroad enthusiasts and Aviation enthusiasts. I kind of wish UNIDEN or Whistler would come out with a radio that can monitor DMR IDAS/ NXD and P-25 Conventional and a GMRS radio with all 30 channels, at least on a handheld. Of course, I know that would probably drive cost of manufacturing up, but you have to admit.
Having one radio to monitor Railroads or Aviation while staying in contact your Family or Friends would sure be nice. I rather invest in one radio for two purposes.
