If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

The navy DOD system is the largest coverage area in the world.
Absolutely not. Seems some folks here want to confuse coverage with distance. The Navy ELMR system, now with it's integration with other military branches, has probably had the DISTANCE record covered for many years. It's COVERAGE, as in the amount of area it covers, is miniscule in comparsion to many other systems though. In my personal, HANDS ON, experience with around a dozen or so southeast region sites the reliable coverage range, from a scanner users POV, on the vast majority falls within 8-12 miles. Due in no small part to the fact most of these sites aren't built out on 300-600 ft towers typically found in comparable public safety systems. I'm sure system radios perform a bit better, but not enough to matter, since that fact also applies to any radio system.

Just because it has sites in North America and sites in Italy doesn't mean you can claim it covers all the way from North America to Italy and everything in between. These statewide systems do have coverage from one end of the state to the other.

Thousands of small islands spread out over a huge area is not equal to one large land mass covering the same "huge area".

Exactly...
Though not a "full time" thing, as I already mentioned, 3 entire states(~154,000 sq miles) and parts of two others are covered by Gulf WIN. Which I'll make a guess at puts the total area well over 160,000 sq miles. (sorry, but not really into looking up the areas for all the counties covered in TX.)

Thanks guys for all the posts. It's interesting when you think about the factors that make a trunked system the largest.

All true; however, in post #3 of the topic, the OP chose "coverage area" as the criteria and that was further defined as actual coverage footprint, not widely separate individual dots of coverage like the DOD or US Navy systems.

Using that criteria Mississippi falls way short of the biggest, heck, even your neighbors to the east and west are larger; although of those, only Louisiana actually has a statewide system. :)

You are absolutely right. LWIN is huge

Define 'huge' Louisiana is tiny, only 51843sq.mi.

You could fit 4 complete Louisiana's into Saskatchewan and still have almost enough room to put a fifth one in.

Saskatchewan has a total area of 251,366 sq mi, of which PPSTN covers about 50%. If you do the math, that works out to about 125,683sq. Mi. Of coverage. One system, all on VHF save for one 800MHz site. PPSTN has more than twice the actual RF coverage of LWIN but has far less users.

I have your answer....Nextel. Or as of lately, at least it was. Remember nextel was/is a trunked two way radio system that just happened to add phone patch.

I think mass state police system is rather large. The entire cape cod is on that system. As well as Boston city services. We also have the states emergency management on their. Also the state haz-mat team. The mass DOT is on there and the state dcr fire is on there. As well as state narcotics teams. Detectives, several state helicopters. And the turnpike authorithy. Also the state doc. And several jails are on also.

We were talking about radios and not geography buddy. No need for rude comments pal. I know mass is small landwise. No need for nonsense.

Actually, you really need to not reply if you don't know the subject matter. As the Original Poster stated, we are talking about coverage area here (see below), so indeed size does matter. So, as a result any of the small individual states can just not bother to be considered.

Good question I don't think of those factors. I'm going to go with coverage area.

And we have two winners: USDOJ, USDOD. The NATIONWIDE DOJ, and DOD P25 TRS's once completed will be the largest systems in the US, TVA will follow them being it will encompass 3 states. It will get knocked to 4th place if CoE gets thiers up. SMR's will be RACOM, Nextel, SOLINC, AEP, Entergy, and then there are what 4 more multistate systems? PS systems.. TVR/Troopnet wins when done., then MSWIN LWIN AWIN Palmetto 800 VIPER SAFE-T MOWIN etc... Technically.. GULFWIN wins as it combines TXWARN, LWIN, AWIN, MSWIN vias RSSI.

Currently the DOJ and DOD systems may be losers but they are not complete yet. If CoE builds the system they want, it will cover from the Great lakes to the Gulf of Mexico.

<sigh> DOD has already been considered and rejected see above.

AEP was mentioned, Entergy is out of the running as it really is 3 separate systems (you're the one who handled that), RACOM is not large at all, NEXTEL is no longer a trunked system unless you want to call Sprint a trunked system and when it was it was not widely linked. As for the TVA, when? I think the OP was wondering about right now.

TVA is under construction with several sites up now. It will cover TN, MS, parts of KY, and parts of AL. MSWIN is almost fully complete, and has coverage well into the GoM with the platform site. AWIN is finished, but about to grow some more. LWIN is complete. The TX system is growing fast. With the linkage engaged to form GulfWIN it is the single largest Public Safety TRS. DOJ's is still growing, and with its linked sites in Mexico, it will be the biggest Federal Public Safety system in the US. (Yes that lil deal Bush did with Mexico, and that Obama supports is happening so yeah the DOJ system will go into Mexico.) Entergy is 3 yes, but one of them covers LA, and a big chunk of TX remember... RACOM has a multistate P25 in the works. SOLINC covers huge chunk of GA, AL, MS, TN, and I believe it has tendrils in LA also? Nextel still is SMR with both analog and digital radio systems even though owned by Sprint. I've used them when working for The Salvation Army in Indy. Oh yeah forgot about the old Airinc.... They sold off a lot of the system, if not all I think though?
