• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

I bought this radio last week and tested it out at the camp this weekend... Everything seemed to work well there was only one thing that I didn't know what was going on and the manual did not mention it. While in the deer stand I had the ear piece in, and after wearing it for awhile the radios voice would say something like "transmission overtime" or "recieve transmission overtime" I never quite heard what it was saying. Does anyone know what this means?

Many new radios, and I think all of the Chinese ones, have an option to conserve power. In case you forgot to shut the radio and put it away, or the power knob got turned on in your pack, after the TIMEOUT period it will prompt you and if there still has been no activity, it will shut down.

Check your manual, this is a documented feature. You can enable/disable it and usually change the time as well.

It only occurs when the headphone and mic is in, is that just part of it, kind of like we know your not looking at the handheld itself so we are going to warn you through the earpiece...

Sounds like the transmission time out feature

Most radios have a menu setting of how many minutes of continuous transmitting to allow before powering off to save battery life and possible burning out of the output finals. Sounds like maybe you accidentally might have had the transmit button pushed while sitting there. Easy to do in a pocket or if the radio is pushed against something while sitting, etc.

Its labeled TOT or Time Out Timer. ;)

After playing with it last night I have found that Leelorr is correct, and one of two things happened the latter being the likely culprit. One was that my mic on the headphones got stuck open somehow (which I could not reproduce last night) or the other was that I had the radio inside my coveralls and most likely was hitting the button while sitting without realizing. Either way thank yall for the help and I will look to be more cautious about positioning the radio as to not do it again.

Get a belt pouch for the radio rather than sticking it in your pocket. You'll be a lot less likely to have accidental discharges, and eliminate the possibility of other stuff in your pocket scratching or damaging the radio.

This Baofeng radio is unable to transmit on the shared FRS channels.

Yes it does. I have one, and it does. It doesn't xmit on the FRS-only frequencies, but it xmits on the shared FRS/GMRS frequencies.

The company clearly states this in the manual

You are mistaken. What page do you think it says this?

Of course it can transmit on the "shared" FRS/GMRS frequencies. What it cannot do is transmit on the "exclusively" FRS frequencies.

Those are FRS/GMRS shared frequencies. They are not FRS only frequencies.

FRS/GMRS combined channel chart - The RadioReference Wiki
Of course! This radio is too high power and has a removable antenna -only in other words, a real GMRS radio before the dreaded bubble pack came along!

The FRS -only frequencies are on the interstitials of the repeater input frequencies. Why would you allow a radio capable of more than .5 watts to muck with people's repeater.

This setup is perfect for GMRS. My old iCom F21GM and my iCom F4t are both set up this way.

Yep. In the context of what you were quoting and replying to, I couldn't tell if you knew that. :)

I re-read the thread and realized I had it confused with another thread concerning these radios. On that thread the individual was stating that the radio was useless to him because the shared GMRS/FRS frequencies were not available. That's what I get for posting so late at night.

You are likewise mistaken. Those are shared FRS/GMRS frequencies. He said, "This Baofeng radio is unable to transmit on the shared FRS channels."

You are not following the thread closely.
