Mark,Article out today says this is the last Honor flight after 20 years?
Operation Honor Culminates in Historic Final Flight
Allegiant Airways runs Honor Flights a couple of times per year. They usually fly from Florida to BWI in the morning. The vets and their caretakers then tour the DC area for the day then return to BWI later in the evening for the flight back home. We have friends in FL involved with these flights.
They leave Orlando very early in the AM and return to Orlando late in the evening. Quite a spectacle. Large crowds of well-wishers waving flags and cheering meet them at BWI. usually lots of folks in BWI waiting to board flts are also cheering these folks. They then take buses escorted by a local veteran's motorcycle club down to DC. Very emotional for the Vets and those greeting them. I have done this a couple of times and it's very special, especially when WWII vets are part of the flight.
BTW: the other day in our local Bob Evans I met a 99-yr old WWII vet. He was using a cane but otherwise was in great shape. Served on the USS Bonhomme Richard in 1944-46.
