Looks like everyone is ready to get out of DC for the weekend, POTUS heading south to Mar A Largo and VP going to Ohio. Looks like VP is also going to Youngstown/ East Palestine, OH on the 3rd, possibly for the 2nd anniversary of train derailment there.
Much of the early news reporting was complicated by the reporters not understanding that DCA airline and helo flights are on different freqs and they therefore left the impression that the helo pilot did not acknowledge the traffic instructions re the CRJ. He did.
A national newspaper missed that as recently as this morning. My guess even the first night was that he was looking at the wrong aircraft and thought he was safe. And new reporting consistently indicates he was at or near 400 feet instead of the necessary 200.
The transition from the Rwy 1 approach to the Rwy 33 approach, while quite legitimate and executed properly, is quite common in view of the winds. It does, however, mean that the decent is much closer to the eastern shore (Bolling). Nothing wrong with this, but in the case of the conditions in the previous two paragraphs it put the two aircraft in close proximity. It also requires a left turn on close final and that would explain why the CRJ was hit on the side and why the helo pilot couldn't see the very bright CRJ landing lights easily.
I'm quite familiar with flying over the area and everything about this is quite common except the altitude and location of the helo.

Agree. What is out now is pure speculation. Let's let the NTSB do a proper investigation.Since the crash is civilian can we please keep it in the thread about the crash and leave this thread for military traffic. Thanks

They also mentioned the frequencies of 228.700 and 395.100.
