JV Post now transmitting on 155.445 and 154.920 at the same time.
Heard them dispatching for units in Jeff. Co. then HQ took over.
Decatur Post now transmitting on 154.9275 and 158.790 at the same time.
At least that is the repeaters I can hear.
HV area units talking on 154.920 but Decatur answering back on 154.9275.
Not sure how that's working. Looks like those two freq.'s are too close together.
HV & Birmingham Post appears to be only on 154.920.
Can't tell if they are transmitting on additional freq.'s like the other post are.

Since the Birmingham repeater went on the air, I have heard units using HP-xx callsigns making traffic stops along I-22 in Walker County. Walker County is now part of Divison E serviced by the Hamilton post, but these HP-xx units are talking to Birmigham State & at night to Headquarters through the Birmingham repeater.

Curious as to what type of units these are & why the departure from usual division assignments. Apparently the Headquarters PCO was confused as well - one night this past weekend she twice called one of these units using his correct xx number, but using a G-George prefix. On both occasions he answed & corrected her...."Headquarters this is HP-xx".

At the hairdresser's, past the liquor store.
HP units heard making traffic stops are generally Felony Awareness Patrol (FAP) Detail units.

I'm doing my best to refrain from comment on DPS communications confusion. Only, I am proud to have served and thankful to have been able to retire before all the changes.

Felony Awareness Patrol ?

Is there a special designation for F.A.P Detail units??

Thanks Jon. That fits perfectly with what I heard. There were two HP units working together and seemed to be doing more than routine traffic stops. They were running firearms & twice heard one of them making narcotic related arrests (I.e. "Enroute to the county jail 10-15, 10-77).

As for the changes in DPS Comms, I can't knowledgeably comment on content, but I can comment on the sound itself. I've been listening to DPS/Highway Patrol traffic since the late 70's. Worked for a time in the 80's for a couple of different LE & EMS agencies. I vividly remember the strong, clear signals & booming voices of Birmingham State, Jacksonville, Huntsville & Quad Cities. A bit sad to hear them replaced by the flat, tinny transmissions accompanied by various clicks, beeps & squeaks of today's digital, remote controlled, narrow bandwidth broadcasts.

It is sad that it has taken this long to actually get the troopers on repeaters. That's something everyone else did back in the tube radio days! I agree that the narrowband sound does lack a lot in comparison to the older "booming" transmissions :(

Alabama needs to be more aggressive with this whole state wide system they are wanting like other states have had for years. AL is so behind everyone, makes me want to move.

RByant2 Some of the confusion is that now there are 10 various agencies all under the new ALEA,so you have all kinds of agents from different state agencies with their radios programmed with all the new frequencies.
Decatur has switched Some Dispatches to 155.4450 for Limestone and Morgan County Units, since i live in Limestone county and fairly close to Interstate i hear them calling in and dispatch responding to them.

All I can say is that Birmingham/Headquarters has to have one of the noisiest dispatch centers I've ever heard. Ever transmission from them has a ton of background noise.

It's like they're dispatching from the middle of the Interstate or something.

Yes, I was listening to Decatur and Huntsville yesterday. I could hear the Decatur 155.445 well at times and of course the 154.920 in Huntsville and Dutton. We have them in our car radios as "State" and "State Car" RX only and with no PL because those were the freq pair used by Madison Co. troopers up till now. As it turns out, it now covers all troopers anywhere near us, so we dont need to pay to reprogram our old vhf radios.

I'm using an older Uniden 92XLT because it's one of the better receivers I've come across. I'm hearing Headquarters regularly dispatching from Selma to north of Jemison and understand from reading here that is Montgomery and they are able to dispatch statewide. From my location though I would also expect to hear Opelika and maybe one or two others near Macon/Lee/Chambers counties. I haven't listened closely the last week or so but don't have any logs for Opelika at all. I'm assuming they are on the repeater system. What frequency are they using? Who else should I be able to hear from this area? Thanks.

I would go ahead and program either al frequencies on the tower close to you or the simiulcast site , each tower (site) will need to be in a separate bank. then program the Tg's that you you want to lisen t to.

Can someone clear something up for me?

I've noticed I'll often hear both sides of the conversation between troopers and the Birmingham post. I'll also hear what I believe to be the Birmingham post(or it could be headquarters) responding to a unit but I can never actually hear that unit.

Are they only using the repeater part of the time or am I hearing another post? The scanner I'm using to monitor them doesn't have pl capabilities.
