• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

"safe" and "legal" are not the same thing, but you shouldn't have any issues, operationally speaking.
JFC. The software is abandoned. It hasn't been updated in years. Get it from W9CR and be done with is. There's no big scary Motorola lawyer coming after you for using a bootleg copy of ASTRO25 Portable software.

Yeah my copy will open on start up, but gives me a message when I try to read the radio.
What’s the message? Usually two messages come up when reading. One is an error no connection message or the other is this radio is inhibited.

For sure - Motorola has had ample opportunity to crack down and they're either unable or unwilling.

Here and there
I use a Windows XP, 32-Bit, for my ancient Motorola CPS for the MTS2000, MCS2000, Professional Series such as the HT & CDM Waris radio, and the Astro 25 for Astro Saber & XTS3000 with USB ports. You have to use an USB to Serial Adapter cable with the Prolific driver, and a RIB.

I believe the 64-Bit operating system will launch the CPS but will not communicate with the radio.
At one point in beginning for the astro 25 the iogear guc232a USB to serial was what Motorola recommended before things modernized

last time of significance was many years ago, before that it was even more significant in IP protection, thats where the stories/warnings continue to this day over a decade ago but it seems ever since they've made it free they don't seem to care as much if any. anyone back then would remember the name Pat Harrington. Theres sellers on ebay making thousands they download cps for free from motorolas site, burn a disk to hawk on ebay.
We've already had at least one thread on here with the email from motorolas support team saying to google old software, there is an internet archive version in addition to the other gentlemans wiki site with older software and mods

I still use my iogear 232 usb to serial for any older serial cable stuff

I had the problem of the "can't find the specified file" when i first ran the cps software. That happens when there is no driver or cable attached to the computer. I used a virtualbox windows xp 32 bit vm on a Linux 64 bit host to program my Motorola XTS 3000 Version 3. I used the Iogear USB to serial cable with prolific chipset which came with a windows xp driver on the cd. This might be hard to find nowadays but you can use an ATEN USB to serial cable with their USB to serial cable driver for XP in a pinch. I also used a Chinese manufactured RKN-4035 cable off ebay. There seems to be no need for a rib box unless you intend to change the firmware in the radio.

Cashanova, the operating system of my computer is 64 bit Debian Linux. I used a vitualbox virtual machine of Windows XP 32 bit to program my radio and tune it with an SDR(Software Defined Radio) using the tuner program that comes with the CPS program. The tuner program needs the COM port to be 1 but the CPS software can use other COM ports.

You could set up Virtual box in any Windows machine 10 or 11 but you would need a copy of Windows XP 32 bit to run in the virtual machine. In the VM you need Windows XP 32 bit to be able to see the USB or COM port if using serial connection.
