I've noticed that Counterterrorism and ESU seem to have different radios from the Vertex P949/APX. (not my photo)

Yes, ESU, CRC and Transit use the Motorola APX7000 radios, IAB uses the APX6000’s. I’m not sure if they will be issued the P949 radios since the APX6000/7000’s are capable of both digital and AES-256 encryption...time will tell.

I am at flushing hospital right now working. An FDNY truck is here with about 40 FDNY EMS personnel handing out what looks like APX 8000 radios and RSMs. I can’t get a good pic as I’m on the clock. I’m wondering if they are going E?

Not to my knowledge. The Apx radios are replacing the xts5000 radios that are EOL.

The APX8000s are being issued amongst the EMS personnel for the last year and a half now I think. Danny is right, they’re phasing out the old 5000s. The new APX radios have an “exclusive” to the FDNY knob on them, similar to the old ones on the Astro series.

I’m just wondering now if all hope is lost with monitoring in the city? I want to invest in an APX but not if everyone is going E.

I don’t think the APX8ks necessarily mean E. Keep in mind EMS operates on multiple systems throughout the city. They do their Hospital “Notes” on the 400MHz Trunked system, and then have multiple TGs on the 800MHz system. I think they did this simply to ease interoperability.

I've been seeing some UMOS carrying 2 portables in the city. They'll have the new radio and a 2nd older one (537/824) on their duty belts. They're not specialty units from the pins/RMP's.

A old high school buddy in loop there says they will eventually go apx8000. Not sure when though for those agencies with ESU etc.

Lol right. I have a 8000 xe in lime, well not mine per say but technically speaking.

Only thing I like over my others is the scan list like in the 6000 is greater than the xts series, and multi band.

But it is a tough one to say its better when multi digital protocol where I am is more important than a multi band and why I also have for self a NX5200.

Interesting... I wonder if they’re utilizing an encrypted channel and testing on it (P949) and using the 824/537 for normal operations.

I'm thinking the same thing, I understand that new citywide channels are going to be added in future. Also, I've been hearing radio repair techs doing radio checks more often now. Usually around midnight across the 5 boroughs.
