so 16 hour days and then go home?
All recruits are being issued new radios in the academy. All new radios will have the issued officers tax number which is how the radio will be tracked internally.
This is interesting. We won't be able to hear conversations but by tracking radio IDs you would learn a bit about the assignment and location of an individual MOS. Strategic flaw or management advantage? Time will tell.
No not really. It’s going to be conventional P25 encrypted. There is no control channel for radio to register, so no RID’s. In P25 conventional the ID is transmitted as a packet with the voice. It’s going to be encrypted so you won’t be able to decode ID’s.
I stand corrected. Thank you for the reply, that made me do some more research. Here is a link to an interesting article about ID’s not being encrypted and so forth.False. P25 conventional transmits RIDs during the voice packet as you indicated, but the data in the voice stream is not encrypted and is in clear. When a channel personality is selected for encrypt or strapped for encrypt, only the voice IMBE frames (which make up the actual voice data) is encrypted.

The TIA-102 specification documents go over in-depth the P25 packet structure. Pretty much all packet types, whether it be HDU, LDU1/2, PDU, and so forth, the frame data in these packets are always in the clear (currently, unless the protect flag is set, which I've never seen any system actually implement), with the encapsulated data having the encryption applied to it.
looks like 81 and 83 have all got their new radios. Not a vx-530/824 in sight in those commands.
Sad to think overtime they will all be junked. However, it is a necessary evil. I would love to be able to buy one just as a “show piece” but that’ll never happen.

So these radios can function in both analog and digital?
Not exactly. Here is the breakdown for the APX series:I noticed the indicator light on the "clear" is yellow as oppose to green or red.

Is the plan to switch to digital by precinct, or are they going to get the new radios to the whole department and then switch everyone over at once?
Has anyone heard any feedback from cops using these radios? Do they like them? I have listened to a few different commands using them and they kinda sound like they are under water when they talk. They doon’t sounds clear as the APX7000’s that they use.
