All recruits are being issued new radios in the academy. All new radios will have the issued officers tax number which is how the radio will be tracked internally.

This is interesting. We won't be able to hear conversations but by tracking radio IDs you would learn a bit about the assignment and location of an individual MOS. Strategic flaw or management advantage? Time will tell.

No not really. It’s going to be conventional P25 encrypted. There is no control channel for radio to register, so no RID’s. In P25 conventional the ID is transmitted as a packet with the voice. It’s going to be encrypted so you won’t be able to decode ID’s.

False. P25 conventional transmits RIDs during the voice packet as you indicated, but the data in the voice stream is not encrypted and is in clear. When a channel personality is selected for encrypt or strapped for encrypt, only the voice IMBE frames (which make up the actual voice data) is encrypted.

I stand corrected. Thank you for the reply, that made me do some more research. Here is a link to an interesting article about ID’s not being encrypted and so forth.

(y) The TIA-102 specification documents go over in-depth the P25 packet structure. Pretty much all packet types, whether it be HDU, LDU1/2, PDU, and so forth, the frame data in these packets are always in the clear (currently, unless the protect flag is set, which I've never seen any system actually implement), with the encapsulated data having the encryption applied to it.

There is a first time for everything. Who knows!

looks like 81 and 83 have all got their new radios. Not a vx-530/824 in sight in those commands.

Sad to think overtime they will all be junked. However, it is a necessary evil. I would love to be able to buy one just as a “show piece” but that’ll never happen.

The vx-530 are beaten to hell. I love the top display. It's so convenient compared to the typical front facing display.

All modern P-25 radios work in analog also. As far as getting any old NYPD radios nowadays forget it. After that boondoggle with the poor guy that got arrested for having NYPD radios he legally bought at auction you won't see any of them. I tried to get a couple of the SSV radios as display items, but they all went to Staten Island to be crushed.

So these radios can function in both analog and digital?

Yea they have duplicates of the same zones. analog zones (clear) and digital zones (encrypted)

I noticed the indicator light on the "clear" is yellow as oppose to green or red.

Not exactly. Here is the breakdown for the APX series:

Solid red - Transmitting
Blinking red - Transmitting with low battery
Double blinking red - Emergency mode
Rapidly blinking red - Self-test failed; fatal error

Solid yellow - Channel busy (conventional only)
Blinking yellow - Receiving a secure (encrypted) transmission (conventional or trunking)

Solid green - Powering up; or radio is on a non-priority channel while programming the scan list
Blinking green - Receiving individual call; or radio is on Priority 2 channel while programming the scan list
Rapidly blinking green - Radio is on Priority 1 channel while programming the scan list

Note that there is no LED indication when receiving a clear (unencrypted) trunked transmission

Is the plan to switch to digital by precinct, or are they going to get the new radios to the whole department and then switch everyone over at once?

I don't think it'll be turned on until every UMOS has been issued a new radio. I think the plan is to slowly turn it on PCT by PCT once all the bugs are worked out.

Has anyone heard any feedback from cops using these radios? Do they like them? I have listened to a few different commands using them and they kinda sound like they are under water when they talk. They don’t sound as clear as the APX7000’s that they use.

I listen to the 81/83 which all have the new radios. They sound fine to me, sounds like a little more bass.

I've noticed that Counterterrorism and ESU seem to have different radios from the Vertex P949/APX. (not my photo)
