I hear over the air static/high noise floor. I don't think I hear anything that i would immediately associate with anything in that hardware chain, the high noise floor would make me guess that you were using the stock antenna indoors.

I would think you need more signal, less local interference & a better signal chain.

[edit]
Grab a 12v battery and take it outside in the middle of your yard with the same antenna. If you don't feel comfortable trying to power it like that (your call) you could try a long extension cord and the wall wart. Get it out of your house, away from the lights, computer power supplies, appliances, LEDs, CFL ballasts, cable modems, etc and see if the high noise floor is still there.

Sounds like you are overdriving the USB audio adapter input. Do you have any gain control over the audio input? Or can you reduce the audio output level of the scanner? I also agree with a417 there's a lot of weak signals in there as well.

If you're not used top monitoring AM (IE: aircraft) it's noisier than FM that usually has full quieting.

What are you using for an antenna? Inside, or outside, how high?

Thank you all for your feedback. @iMONITOR @AB5ID @dcr_inc @a417

to answer few questions:
1. Unfortunately, I'm temporarily using an indoor diamond MR77
2. for the audio feed, I'm using the Record output from the back of the scanner. this is not controlled I believe.
3. Question: is there any setting that I need to tweak on the ProScan Audio Controls?

Thank you.

Not really. I see one comment that you're overdriving the USB audio adapter input. If that's the case then turn down the scanner volume a bit and you may have to turn up the Win Mixer input level a bit to compensate.

Thank you @ProScan ; I actually have the volume nob all the way to zero and I use the recording audio feed from the back of the scanner (green outlet) which is not controlled by the volume. so, I'm not sure how to tune that.

Any updates? I am a bit late to this thread, but all I heard was poor signal levels. There could be an elevated noise floor.

not yet, waiting for a little until POTUS leaves and it calms down here. too much mil traffic above us with quite a good signal.. so I'm enjoying listing to BIGFOOT with my crappy indoor antenna :) but I will keep you all posted.

thanks for checking.
