We will see things like flash memory and built in gps sooner rather than later.

Why would we need to buy new scanners if they don't?

By the way, I agree with you in most of what you're saying, I'm a technogeek myself BUT before we stray too far off-topic and getting back to my point, I still think Uniden did fine by not integrating the GPS *YET* into the scanner. I don't think is quite feasible yet but I do agree with you in that it might happen in time....

GPS for 996

I did not post this in for sale because I wanted to offer it to someone who was purchasing a 996 since I have decided not to. I have a Magellan GPS-315 which has been used maybe 5 times in its lifetime and although I do not have the original box I have the original manual. It uses 2 AA batteries has the screen on it and is in very good condition. I also have the Auto adapter/Serial cable so that you can plug it into the car and it has a 9 pin serial connector cable as well. I also have the protective case I bought for it when I first got it. It does the NEMA 0183 and is selectable between NEMA version 1.5 and 2.1. The baud rates are selectable 1200/4800/9600 or 19200. The manual has a section talking about and explaining the NEMA protocol. Anyway I will ship to the lower 48 states and ONLY ACCEPT a postal money order for payment. I will sell it for $50.00 plus $15.00 for US PRIORITY mail shipping and will include insurance and delivery confirmation. You will have to provide your own batteries. The unit works great.

You can contact me at: wsuite@dfwmyhome.com if you would like it. I trade on ebay as Scanman3 if you need to seed feedback references.

Thanks.
Wayne.

Now if we could get this in a handheld or mobile in the future...

It sounds like the Garmin Rino.

I wrote them once and inquired why they didn't consider taking their marine HT transceiver/GPS (190 series I think) product and adapt it for public service use with the GPS location features. It seems like it would be a sure thing to me. Imagine a P25 transceiver with the ability to see others on the screen on the front in real time. I bet search and rescue and wild fire guys would love it.

Since it doesn't appear that we will be getting a remote mount head from Uniden, a question about the physical size and bottom of the unit.

Will this be similar in size to the Pro-2096? I'm guessing that it will because of the DIN mounting that has been mentioned in an earlier post. Also will there be a "stand" mounted to the bottom of the unit like the BC796 or will the mounting bracket act as a stand, similar to the Pro-2096?

If the size is the same that would be great as I recall the Pro-2096 being roughly 5 1/2" deep - which is somewhat similar to a larger remote mount unit. The only issue if all of the wiring (antenna, speaker, power, GPS) that will be needed. But I will figure out something!!!

If someone could comment on the physical size and stand setup that would be great!! I'm hoping for the bracket to act as the stand. That way it will be easier to "stack" equipment without having to remove the attached stand.

Thank you!!!!

If I am not mistaken, it looks like from the picture, the GPS cable plugs into the front of the unit.

Don't forget about the DB-9 in the rear you can use for the GPS. That would keep the front free for programming.

"Of course you have to be a member of the group to access it."

Apparently not - your link is specific enough to get it fine because I'm not a member but it accessed with no problems.

Woops, maybe I violated some sort of membership protocol. Not my fault the link is not password protected.

Anyway, cool, glad it works.

Yahoo Link To .pdf File Not Working

UPDATE
Disregard, I read the Yahoo Group and found out why - Yahoo bandwidth throttles  . Maybe the solution for this is to temporarily put a few copies of the .pdf file in the files area and remove them later, after the hype calms down. Can't hurt!

UPDATE: I was able to download it. Yea! :)

Paul, the link on the Yahoo Group is B/O. When I click the link, I am forwarded to a page that reads:

Document Not Found
The document you requested could not be found.

Do I have the correct link?

Or am I at the wrong Yahoo Group?

I downloaded the manual and I noticed the sensitivity is listed for .3uV for VHF-Hi. Thats .2uV over my current model. If they can get it a little bit lower they will be competing with commerical radios, as far as the RX goes anyways.

After reading the post on this forum and others such as the BCD996T Yahoo Group, it (the BCD996T) really does look like a must have scanner for the travelling type of person.

I don’t know how much you guy’s know about Trunk Radio Systems in Australia, but living here in Sydney NSW, most of our Emergency Services operate on our State Government Trunk Radio System that is the largest in the world, covering some 93195 square miles (150,000 square kilometres) with hundreds of Transmission sites across the state.

The idea of a scanner that can use GPS input to switch On & Off both Trunk and Conventional radio sites is a great idea if you are like me and do some miles each year visiting family around the country side.

I just hope we see the BCD996T down here in Australia as well and at an affordable price, considering the BCD396T is selling here for a Suggested Retail price of $999, the retail price for the 996 could be anywhere from $1,000 to $2,000.

With the radio due to hit the dealers shelves in a month, or two, the design is already "cast in stone". In fact, that was the case when the FCC approved it months ago! It is what it is, with the exception of what can be manipulated in firmware.
