PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colorado – February 4, 2010 The North American Aerospace Defense Command will conduct exercise flights in the skies in the vicinity of the Toledo, Youngstown and Canton areas of Ohio. The flights will take place in the mid-afternoon, and people can expect to hear and see NORAD fighter aircraft in close proximity with general aviation aircraft as they practice their intercept and identification procedures.

The exercise has been carefully planned and will be closely controlled to ensure NORAD’s rapid response capability.

NORAD has conducted exercise flights of this nature throughout the U.S. and Canada since the start of Operation Noble Eagle, the command’s response to the terrorist attacks that occurred on Sept. 11, 2001. Each exercise flight utilizes a scenario to test NORAD’s response, systems and equipment. Scenarios could include counter-drug operations, aircraft in distress, aircraft defecting, hijacking, unknown aircraft, Dangerous Military Activity, Temporary Flight Restriction violation or airborne terrorist.

Since Sept. 11, 2001, NORAD fighters have responded to more than 3,300 possible air threats in Canada and the United States.

http://www.faa.gov/air_traffic/publi...5/aim0506.html

The 180th FW will be performing the intercepts. I would suggest monitoring the following frequencies:

118.600 CAK A/D (187-006)
121.500 GUARD ***should be used heavily***
123.975 TOL A/D
125.500 CAK A/D (007-186)
126.100 TOL A/D (360-179) V05
133.950 YNG A/D
134.350 TOL A/D (180-359) V04
138.425 AIRTAC V10?
139.625 AIRTAC V06
139.750 AIRTAC V09?
139.975 AIRTAC V07
141.600 AIRTAC V08
141.650 BEEHIVE OPS V01
143.850 OPS
228.900 HUNTRESS
243.000 GUARD
307.000 TOL A/D (360-179) U05
317.550 TOL A/D (180-359) U04
322.300 YNG A/D
323.000 CAK A/D (187-006)
338.150 BEEHIVE OPS U01
364.200 AICC PRIMARY
371.875 CAK A/D (007-186)
384.100 AICC SECONDARY

Also remember to monitor common NORAD frequencies as well. In addition, expect traffic on VHF ARTCC, as the F-16s are likely to communicate with Huntress on UHF and ATC on VHF.

REAL TIME:

Patterson AFB under alert conditions as of 1900Z...a helicopter flying powerline control was told to disregard. This is probably another NAOC scramble exercise.

Good info - this may mean that 228.900 is the standard Huntress ground outlet frequency for our area (or at least one of them).

Yep, 260.9 and 228.9 are generally well-heard up here as the HUNTRESS primary and secondary.

MUDDY flt

I was able to hear some of it after work today between 02:10pm to 2:35pm. I kept hearing only their numbers, 3, & 4. Never did hear them use a call sign, but I figured it would be MUDDY. To bad they didn't have this exercise in 2 weeks, because I'm off work then. Oh well.

Thanks for posting the great info.

Patterson, 2/14:
LOBO 071 (C-9B, unid) - RON

2/15:
NAVY JT 781 (C-9B, unid) - to KNBC (aborted takeoff for icing)
LOBO 071 (C-9B, unid) - to KPIE (aborted takeoff for icing)
[see below for more information on this]

2/16:
NAVY JT 781 (C-9B, unid) - to KNBC
LOBO 071 (C-9B, unid) - to KPIE

*****
LOBO 071 (C-9B, 16004x) arrived on 2/14 and RON.

In the morning on 2/15, NAVY JT 781 (C-9B, unid) arrived. When taxiing in, LOBO asked NAVY about icing and identified themselves as "29." NAVY called in for clearance first (to KNBC), followed by LOBO (to KPIE). NAVY taxied out and held on taxiway C (the only one open) for deicing, then back-taxied on 5L. Once in position, they reported that the inboard wing edges were icing and requested another deicing in place on 5L. LOBO said they would do the same after NAVY took off, and NAVY asked LOBO ("29") to change to 323.700. NAVY then called the tower asking if ground equipment could plow the runway while they were being deiced. After plowing the runway and deicing NAVY again, the ice was still building up too much for takeoff, so both taxied back to the ramp - this required some shuffling, since only one runway and one taxiway was open.

NAVY JT 781 departed the next morning (2/16), followed in the afternoon by LOBO 071. LOBO asked tower to pass on a thank you to TA and Base Ops for all their help.
*****

Continuing...2/17:
PAT 142 (unid) - to KADW
REACH 584 (C-5A, 70-0461) - returning from mission, A3 (caster power backs inop, secondary strap ??, ?? right ride leaking, pilot's side HSI), parking A5, requesting Customs

2/18 (around 3 AM local):
REACH 2110 (C-17A, 02-1110) - called Metro for weather at KDOV, FL350, 20 mi ? CVG

YODER 21 (x4) has been working Buckeye MOA since around 2000Z or so. I have them on 240.350, but not picking up any VHF airtacs - heard one of them call to push AUX 7. It could just be something strange with my radio, but odd nonetheless.

YODER 41 (x4) in the MOA at 0020Z. Airtacs on V07 139.975 and V08 141.600. One aircraft is acting as DARKSTAR on 316.125.

On the way in, heard them on V06 139.625 chatting a bit. First picked them up with ZID on 360.675 > 290.500 > 316.125.

More to add about YODER:

After ACM, 41/42 decided to RTB, 43/44 met up in the Charlie shelf with TAZZ 73 for a quick AR. TAZZ had them switch over to AR Primary 343.800.

Jared,

Is YODER a callsign now being used by the 180th FW from Toledo?

Yes, someone in the Michigan forums confirmed it when one of them was having a conversation with ATC and quoted it for me - it's in that thread somewhere.

I've only heard them using the following callsigns recently:
LOMA (travel?)
MUDDY
STING
YODER
