The Admin of the Midwest City is a great bunch of men that is why Midwest city is a class 1 ISO fire dept.
and the only one in the state.

Um ok. I saw a N.H.F.D. ,Edmond, Moore, and I think a Deer Creek tanker there as well, so your not the only ones that was there Choctaw.

Again you are incorrect. Tinker is also a 1 ISO. At no time did I imply that we were the only ones out there... but I know which departments did what they were supposed to do and which ones didn't.

All radios now a days are ran by computer when you get dispatched, the dispatcher is using a computer
"Midwest EMS missed a call the other night due to no reception in the location that they were in.'
Well I would have to see that on the report.

As far as the other departments trying to raise us on county... It was during the day therefore we were on our own channel. In any case we would have been on that freq anyway being the size incident that it was to avoid tying up county. MWC set up a command post in our town (which is a no-no) (A) after we had already set command in our town and (B) well away from where they should have been and was asked to set up a unified command with us at the high school when the fire was going through Henney heading towards Choctaw Rd. They chose not to do so... and took them forever to send a brush rig and an engine back to us later that night.

"We had 5 trucks in their town when Barnes Wrecker caught on fire. The same help was not even close to extended when the fire got into our town... Then on Saturday, on the Hiwassee fire, they sat up on Hiwassee first with red line pulled, not doing anything, then sat up on green oaks and pretty much watched. We wound up with 4 dozers on both sides of the road to gain access to the fire. I don't know about you but that pretty much leaves a bad taste in your mouth.

We wound up with 31 different departments on scene with this fire and had nobody killed or seriously injured. Could have been worse but could have been a whole lot better. The better part is partially due to communications but most of it is tactics. You have the bigger departments trying to tell the smaller ones what to do or how to do it because they are the "big boys" when in reality they too are in entirely over there head. Nobody does it the same and until we do there will never be true "interoperability"."

Ok, where to start? Oklahoma County first sent you to 29th and Choctaw you drove 206,208 (I love the new LED light system on 208 BTW) down there and then ask county of a correction, The fire started in Midwest City, So Midwest City had command, your Choctaw High school command was not needed you should of came to the 29th and Westminster command. I am so sorry Midwest City had three housing additions on fire at the time you asked for help, I guess they should have just told the home owners sorry, but Choctaw fire needs us. Midwest City is not going to send FFs in it to a tree line to stop a fire, let it burn into a open field then put it out. That is what happened Saturday. The red line was to stop/put out any house fires on Elizabeth so that is what that is all about.

12 houses Midwest City, 58 houses Choctaw there is a fact for you. If you and N.P.F.D. had been at Barnes sooner the out come could have been a whole lot better.

The Midwest City fire guys worked there buts off and was able to talk to Edmond, Deer Creek, N.H.F.D.,
Village, Bethany, Moore, Shawnee, Tecumseh and Mustang. Ops 4 is in the state radio's at least in Midwest City radio's, the state really needs to turn those patches on soon.

On a different note I thought the Local P.D.s play well together even if Oklahoma County wanted to run the show. The show runner that day was Midwest City fire period.

Well, I gotta chime in a little. I'll admit, I was monitoring MWC Fire on the 800's but I was answering to Choctaw command because it became strikingly obvious after arriving in Choctaw, that the MWC command post really didn't have much of a clue as to what was exactly going on off the main roads in Choctaw. When we reported to 10th and Indian Meridian after putting out a few structures behind the high school, as requested by MWC command, there was absolutely nothing to do. They had 20 trucks lined up waiting on "a glow" back 1/2 mile into the woods behind the Choctaw City Park. We ended up sending out BP-3 through the city park behind Harrah 328 and an Okla Co Dist 2 bulldozer. We put the "glow" out. This glow they were waiting on was actually several little tiny hot spots within the trees....It took no time to get it pretty much all out. All this time, MWC still has trucks waiting on the "glow" out on I.M.

We took our other trucks and went back to the addition behind the HS to fight more house fires. I don't really care who's in command but everyone needs to try and work together.

Just my $.02

Thank you again Eharlow for your help. "I don't really care who's in command but everyone needs to try and work together." I agree with you 100%

Interesting thread, I stumbled across this while searching for other information and couldn't resist the urge to join. I am a Captain in MWC and reside in Choctaw. I was off-duty the day of the fire and was called in about 1600 and worked until 0800 the next morning in both MWC and Choctaw on a MWC Engine (it was Engine 5, that was being referred to as Engine 6 - it was a reserve when the call came in), we actually set up on Choctaw Road and Reno and ensure CFD Station #3 was safe. I was also on duty Saturday when the other fire was reported in Choctaw and spread into MWC.

I checked with our Fire Marshal and they have reports of over 25 fire departments and over 255 firefighters assisting! Amazing I think! We were indeed over our head, since an incident of this magnitude doesn't occur much. But, thank GOD there were a lot of dedicated people who assisted in MANY capacities and no one was seriously injured or killed. Despite the "opinions" of how it went, where it went, or where it stopped, I am proud to be part of the OKLAHOMA response. I have a lot of respect for the fine people who protect my family in Choctaw.

I had a lot experiences in those 16 or so hours and learned a lot. I thought I made a lot good decisions and a lot of bad ones, but I am only human. I was one of the guys waiting on the "glow" to hit Hidden Valley, which I think is in Choctaw limits. MWC command sent is there to ensure fire was spreading there. We were blessed with the presence of a tanker from Crooked Oak (I think - please forgive if that is not right - I was tired). Ended up not reaching the neighborhood - thank goodnes - because of some great work by some brush pumpers! So we wasted about an hour sitting on "glow" - wow did I feel stupid!

Oops - silly me - once again - I screwed up - I accidently hit reply before I was done!

Anyways - I was wrapping up my two cents. I was searching for some more information about our radios - so I could understand them a bit more - again, I am really a dumb firefighter trying my best. I hope I can learn a lot from you folks.

I can't speak for everyone on the MWCFD, but I do know I had the privlege of seeing a lot of bravery and toughness from a lot of fine people. Especially my good brothers from Nicoma Park FD on Camelot in the Oakwood East Addition - I am pretty sure they saved my sisters house! It was nice to know we could depend on others. Thanks again

Sentrymechanic - interesting information on Tinker FD and an ISO-1. --Not that it really matters --but, I was involved in the preparing and evaluation of MWCFD receiving an ISO-1 rating and am very close to the good brothers at Tinker Fire. I know for a fact that Tinker did an evaluation within the last two years and received a 2. They are preparing for another because they have acquired the GM building and they expect their rating to go up because of the lack of water supply around the building. It is also interesting they conducted the evaluation as a measuring stick to their capabilities only (shows their level of professionalism), not for insurance ratings, since their properties are government owned, they are insured differently than those in civilian communities. I have been told the ISO public protection classifications are only applicable to those occupancies within a civilian jurisdictions. I do strongly believe that Chief Ford and Tinker FD is the best equipped, most prepared and better trained than most departments throughout the State and are a wonderful resource for those of us who are less equipped jurisdications.

Again, this is just some information I am trying to learn. There are so many different opinions and ideas around, sometimes it is hard to separate fact from fiction. Just my two cents.........

You are indeed correct about Tinker. Last I had heard was that they were a 1. You came to the right place to learn about any and all radios. This site is an outstanding reference tool that will help you dig through fact and fiction.

Jarrett,

I really didn't intend to bash MWCFD whatsoever, I think I was just tired of the bickering back and forth and let myself vent on here. I was worn plum out by the time we even got to the Choctaw/MWC area after spending the majority of the day up at the Mulhall/Stillwater fire so I just wanted to get in, put out some fire and get home. I was just really upset at the whole "glow" issue because all it took was walking (or driving in a BP) back in there to it and you could tell it was nothing. I walked in to check it because I absolutely hate sitting and waiting. It reminds me too much of OKC on grass fires. I think all departments involved, especially the EOC and MWC/Del City guys did an excellent job doing what they could...it obviously shows or the structures lost tally would be MUCH higher.

All in all, it went about as good as any large scale incident could have. I've been a part of several, many of the grass fires, and no matter how much you train and plan, it never goes absolutely perfect!

I can echo this statement. BTW I made some statements over the last few days that I regret. I was tired and angry at the time I wrote them and should not have done so. I know better than to get caught up in b.s and arguing with people that you just can't reach and yet I did it anyway.

Looking back with a now unclouded mind, I can say that we all did everything we could and that we are all human, mistakes and all.

Again I apologize for the derogatory statements made against any departments including MWCFD and will take the full heat for them...

It's tough for actual firefighters, cops, paramedics, etc to come in here and exchange a few ideas, then have to explain everything to outside hobbyists looking "from the outside in". I feel for you guys.

Beating your head against the wall in the field and then on here really makes the stockholders at Advil and Tylenol happy though. :)
