I've been reading reviews from folks who have them in Japan. They are very impressed with it. I plan on getting one to replace my PCR1000. I like the sound over USB.

Yes, sound via USB cable is a nice feature. Too bad cable length is so limited with USB. I've always had thoughts of mounting one of these in an upstairs closet, to keep the coax run to the antenna as short as possible, then run the data cable, and audio cable to the first floor, to my computer. RS232 serial cables can be run hundreds of feet. I guess I could always pick up a used PCR-1000. I've only had three so far.

I'm definitely intrigued. I've got about 3 scanners on the list when I come off of my self imposed scanner buying moratorium. The new Icom may be the one I break it with.

I've got a PCR-1000 and it sounds like this may be a step up from it. I had been thinking of trading it for a winradio model or something but I'll have to wait and see how the new Icom shakes out.

Grove Enterprises has the new ICOM PCR-1500 / R-1500 on their web site, with new pictures, including screen shots of the software.

It's still pending FCC approval at this time.

The Grove link shows a pic of what looks to be a pretty slick little remote control head for mobile or non-PC controlled installations. It looks almost identical to the Icom IC-208H remote head, which is nice and small. Very cool.

That's the Icom R-1500, and the PCR-1500 comes without the remote head, strictly for computer control.

Now, if they only did trunking, and digital!

$699.96?? Wow, way more expensive than I thought it would be. I guess I'll stick with my PCR1000 until the price drops a bit. I wonder if TrunkPCR software will work with these new radios...

Looks like an awesome radio. I too hope the author of TrunkPCR will make his software work for this.
Once we find out more I'll probably pick one of these up and move my PCR-1000 to another location for remote monitoring.

Looking at Universal Radio's web page, it appears the Icom PCR-1500/R-1500 are shipping! The PCR-1500 @ $579.95, and the R-1500 @ $699.95. These new models use USB cables, instead of RS232 serial cables.

Up to 25 channel activities can be observed on the multi-channel monitor screen at a glance. (see below) According to the S-Meter level, each channel status is visually displayed by three background colors. When you click a busy channel, you can easily start listening to the selected channel. Received audio can be stored on the PC with WAV format. Other refinements include: CTCSS/DCS, pocket beep, IF shift, auto memory write, AFC, AGC, weather alert, 24 digit DTMF tone decoder and up to 2700 memory channels per file.

You can use something called a "USB Extender" to convert USB to ethernet/CAT5 cable
up to 100' in length and then back to USB at the PC.

FCC Approval Soon!

I contacted Universal Radio about the scheduled arrival of the new PCR1500's, and was told the FCC approval should be given by the end of this month.

The wait is almost over. I've been saving for mine and will hit the order button as soon as they are available.

Hope I won't regret it.

I’ve owned my PCR1000 w/DSP for about 4 years now and I love it.

I wonder if the PCR-1500 will have huge blocks of 800 MHZ chopped in the US version. Like the R-20.
Makes it unusable for some 800MHZ public safety monitoring.

Anyone have any information on installing the DSP in the PCR1500? I would think this is the same as the PCR1000 since it's the same UT-106.

Thanks,
Jr Bob D.

That's still optional? I can't believe they are so cheap as to not included that as standard. On top of that, the DSP module doesn't work that great. It's audio DSP, not RF DSP to add insult to injury.

hi guys, just reading your posts.

The manual is now online: http://www.icom.co.jp/manual/external/transceivers/IC-PCR1500.pdf

They seem to be using the 'Uniden' definition of full coverage. If you go to the back of the manual, there are lots of gaps in the RF ranges. Anyone know what is in those slices that are missing above 1.3gig ?

The canadian pcr-1000 has no gaps. I wonder if a mod will be available to close the gaps. I would not want a french version; look at those gaps!

According to the manual, the driver installs as a fake com port. The software simply is accessing the com port. That tells me 3rd software for the pcr100/1000 will probably work as-is.

I also wonder if the remote head is nothing more than a device that sends the same commands that a computer would normally send. If yes, the remote-control port is probably TTL serial and a max232 chip would allow you to use the radio with a normal com port. This is important if you attic mount the radio with a 30 foot serial+audio cable.

I like my pcr-100. I use it with Ham Radio Deluxe for scanning about. I am sure I will like the 1500.
