My only guess is that the little antenna is tuned mostly for 800MHz and trunking performance, and that is what GRE went for.

Since you mentioned that, id say your most likely right on the antenna....We never had any 800 mhz here in my area, still dont. Im averaging 9 hrs with my eneloops,,i have my lcd at #4 and keypad turned off. I really like the sanyo's since ive used them past few yrs now, and id really like trying the newer black ones that are 2500 mah,,,but best average pricing ive seen on them is around $ 20. for pack of 4,,,I only paid $ 21.79 shipped for two packs of 4 of the white ones, that have the improved charge cycle life of up to 1500 charges now.

I didn't know they came out with 2500mAh. I just picked up another 4 pack of the new 1,500 charge 2000mAh for $10.99.

Only thing that i didnt care for is the newer 2500 mah eneloops are only rated for up to 500 recharges,,compared to the 1500 on the original ones, thats a big difference. I guess my 2 yr old eneloops were showing their age, After conditioning them i got just about 10 hrs run time on the new ones, And finally the Pro-18's low battery tone worked for the first time since i had it !!....I do recall reading on the web somewhere, that the battery type and condition of the batteries are important for the pro-18 battery indicator and low battery tone , to work properly.

As driven by the battery switch (NiMIH vs Alkaline) if I am not mistaken.

Correct Dave,,,and their implying that the 18 and 800 is quite dependent on batteries, being in very good condition for the indicator and low tone to work. I found that out myself, as mentioned, replacing my 2 yr old moderatly used sanyo batteries with new ones.

I'm also thinking that the switch also sets different calibration for low battery warning and battery icon, but the radio would not know what MaH value of the battery. Is this what your saying also?

Yes from everything ive read the correct switch postion in the battery compartment is important,,,Ive seen a past post of the 800 where DonS posted you should use the ni-mh setting if using rechargeables, due to correct functioning of the indicator. No the mah value isnt important, The pro-18 appears to be fussy with the brand and condition the rechargeables are in. My sanyo eneloops 2000 mah were only 2 yrs old and not overly used, but during the first 2 weeks i had my scanner the indicator was never accurate, sometimes it stayed full showing and went down all at once, next time it would drop continually fast, and it never sounded a low battery tone....I purchased new sanyo eneloops of the same type and everything functioned fine.

Yup, i would like to know if the paint is peeling off the case as the GRE brand is famous for....

I can confirm that it is, at least on my model. 23xx serial number with the same faceplate peeling symptoms discussed in the psr-800 thread. Started showing up after about a week of light usage.

Peeling on the Pro-18 or the PSR-800?

Pro-18. Note that it's not all over the body, just on the front plastic sheet that surrounds the buttons and covers the display. Looks like they coated it with some sort of matte finish (except for where the display is) and it isn't adhering to the glossy plastic very well. The finish softens up with handling and comes right off with the back of a thumb nail.

I don't imagine I'll do anything about it. I really do like the radio itself.

Just like it's sister PSR-800, I received a replacement cover and it look like it has that plastic coating that a lot of electronic have on their screens. It's that protective coating that comes off after a couple of weeks or so. At this point I will leave what ever it is on until it start to come off. I have lost a lot of my vision so I'm not even sure there is some thing there. :)

The PSR-800 firmware has to be downloaded from the EZ-Scan Digital software, just as I suspect the Pro-18 iScan Digital software would be, however nothing has announced if/when a firmware update is available for the Pro-18. Did anyone try to update from the software yet?
