I don't know Landon's age or how old he looks, but impersonating a police officer comes to mind.

Lightbar + police duty equipment + commercial portable + immaturity = bad news

I fail to see the big issue here.

Arcadia PD is on 507 something MHz. GMRS is on 462 MHz. What is so hard about programming a radio for the guy. It's not like he is wanting to access encrypted channels on the Orange County trunked system or anything like that. I think it's funny how people make such a big deal about this and just because he is 15 assume he is going to cause trouble. I was into scanning at 15 and I am sure many others were too. I also think it would be nice to have a portable radio to listen to the local PD (RX only) and chat with friends on GMRS. I don't see the crime in that.

People always brag about having commercial "Motorola" radios and how they are so superior to scanners. Why continue to brag about how good they are if you don't want the general public purchasing them? That is something that has always irked me.

Sorry for getting off topic here but I think it's wrong for everybody to accuse him of committing a crime that hasn't taken place.

Anyway good luck in getting your radio programmed.

Only Landon knows the true reason why he asking about so many different things and what his purpose for using those things...

He could indeed be a whacker and if that be the case I’m sure he’ll eventually be dealt with once he shows up at one to many calls, hopefully though through his actions he’ll not have placed anyone in danger.

It is also possible that with him being a 15 year old that he is just over anxious and eager about something he finds exciting. Many of us, myself included, have been way too quick to pass judgment on him some of which may have had good intentions on trying to prevent him from getting in the way of those actual responders if he did or does turn out to be a whacker. I don’t think that anyone on here could change the mind of someone that was planning on doing something questionable or illegal if that was their intent.

I have to hand it to Landon though, as a 15 year old, he has taken everything thrown at him with style and maturity not normally seen in someone his age. As I stated in another post regarding him his responses have been much better than many assumed to be an adult.

The only thing that I can further say is that if you don’t like what Landon is posting the most simple thing to do is to totally ignore his post by not responding to them.

... Usually, one, should use their scanner to listen to a call, but yet avoid the scene of that call. I feel it would probably be very bad to get in the way of emergancy services during a call.

I'm curious as to how many hams started out at a similar age.

Agreed.

I would have O.K.'ed his request, right when he asked, except at the moment, I'm dealing with my own radio problems...my MTS2000 is having Rx fits.

Guys, lighten up.

There is no law at all against having PS freq's for RX only in a Motorola radio.

Just becuase it's a radio and says "/\/\otorola", doesn't make it illegal. Before I was able to program the HT1000 myself, I had radio shops do it, and had no problem, so long it was RX only. I was also Landon's age at that time. There is no big deal at all with that.

Landonjenson send me a 'nother pm.

I'm not one of the 'braggers' about my Motorola equipment, as Brandon states. I stated why I use Motorola equipment; it is far superior to any available scanner.

I have also been PM ing Landon trying to get him steered in the right direction for his radio programming needs. Most radio shops WILL program RECEIVE ONLY channels in a commercial HT; there is no liability on their part for doing this. Why some of you insist that there is liability is beyond me. The law doesn't prohibit this in the least. The law DOES prohibit interference on a Public Safety radio network, and if the radios transmit is disabled, that cannot be done. Just like a scanner. You amatuer operators know this, but some of you are just being rediculous and severely anal about it. If you are capable of programming, and don't want to do it, then don't say anything! Why rub the kids nose in it? However, I recognize your concern for your amatuer license, and I respect that, even though I think it is unfounded.

Now, while I do agree that Landon is an overeager teenager, I did also notice that hs questions about lightbars, and related police equipment raised my eyebrows a bit. But, remembering what I was like when I was his age, and having kids of my own that were his age not all that long ago, I just think he is eager. I was given a Plectron on the local fire freq when I was 10. My Dad was the FD's Deputy Chief, and I got to use one of the spares. I received my first scanner when I was 14, and before that, I monitored with that Plectron, and an old Realistic tunable receiver that I got when I was 12. So, I understand Landon's enthusiasm completely.

Lighten up, fellas, and at least help point him in the right direction, even if you don't want to or can't help him directly.

The easiest way for him to do it, would be to locate the nearest Moto dealer, they shouldn't charge more then 10 minutes worth of labor for programming the channels Rx only, plus, if you show them a legal GMRS or Amature FCC lic. they will probably program those channels Rx/Tx (GMRS/Amature of course). Or at least, most of the local Moto dealers around here will do that.

If the radio is an eBay radio, you could have them check the alignment out too ;).

If it's for conventional frequencies, then yes. Trunked is out of the question. Sorry man, I do have to put my foot down on the trunking side of things.

MTX8000s are used on trunking systems in the 800 MHz band. As far as I know, they are not. I've never even heard of QCII being used over a trunked system.

No. As rescue161 said, Motorola Quickcall tones are not capable of being used on trunking sytems. all instances where you may here them on a trunked system is because they are simulcasting on a lower band frequency where tone pagers operate (HF, VHF, UHF).

There are a few reputable sellers on eBay (check feedback) that offer free programming with the radio. If you obtain your GMRS license (no test required), you can have it programmed for any of the GMRS frequencies, or any of the first 14 FRS channels, and you'll be able to legally talk on all those at the full 4~5 watts!

GMRS allows you transmit at up to 50 watts on the 8 primary channels and up to 5 watts on FRS channels 1-7. On FRS channels 8-14 (the 467MHz splits in between the primary repeater inputs) you are limited to 1/2 watt power output. There would be 15 channels he could transmit on but the other 7 would have to be set to receive only. This is how I have my Icom IC-F4-4 HTs set up to be legal.

Take Care!
